Elsecar at the Races 2017

Date: 9 April 2017

Location: Doncaster Racecourse, South Yorkshire

Words & Photos by Henry Phull

Elsecar at the Races is a new one for us at Slam Sanctuary, so let’s begin with a little history… What started out as a car meet known as ‘Elsecar Mega Meet’ / ‘Club GTI Mega Meet’ a whole 19 years ago, this historical gathering of cars has grown into something much, much bigger. With previous meets taking place at the Elsecar Heritage Centre in Elsecar, Barnsley, they were seeing over 200 show cars and 200 club cars in attendance! With popularity continually growing, 2016 saw the organisers move the event to Doncaster Racecourse, which has the the capacity for 700+ vehicles. This went hand-in-hand with re-naming the show to ‘Elsecar at the Races’. Our friends at Only Charged Dubs (and Elsecar show sponsors) had been raving about last year’s show, which meant we had to come up this year to see what all the fuss was about. We were met with one of most chilled-out events we’d ever been to. The whole vibe was perfect and everyone was extremely welcoming and friendly to each other. Along with an excellent mix of stanced, classic, air-cooled, and a whole host of club stands on display, Elsecar is a show that any petrolhead can enjoy – catering for all tastes. With so much to see, we captured some of our favourites, check them out below.

So, was it worth the 8-hour round trip? Based down on the South Coast, we don’t often get up to Yorkshire, but 2017 is all about expanding our horizons and we’re so glad to have made the journey. It was totally refreshing to visit to a car show with so many different sorts of vehicles to lust over, and, although it’s predominantly a VAG show, there were still plenty of other marques being shown off – with no hatred (often the case at similar events). Of course, The glorious weather made the day even better, and it was nice to have the indoor part of the show to catch some much needed shade from the sun. No doubt, Elsecar at the Races will be added to our annual diary for the foreseeable future. Thanks to the guys at Only Charged Dubs for letting us tag along for the weekend, too.

Ultimate Dubs 2017

Date: 11/12 March 2017

Location: Telford International Centre, Shropshire

Words & Photos by Henry Phull

It’s been a long, drawn out, winter for us at Slam Sanctuary. So, we were fully stoked to finally arrive at Ultimate Dubs in Telford last weekend for the ‘show season’ opener. Hosted over a Saturday evening and all day Sunday, it’s a great chance for friends to catch-up after being busy with their normal lives… With the majority of people staying overnight, there’s plenty of time for social gatherings, whether it’s over cars, food, or beers – unless you’re too busy setting up and running a stand, like us, unfortunately! That’s because we’ve been sitting on the brand new Spring ’17 clothing collection for a couple of months waiting to drop it on you all at Ultimate Dubs. Well, it went down an absolute treat – we can’t thank everyone enough for almost clearing out the whole store. In fact, we’ve already had to restock a lot of items, which should be available through our online store in a few weeks time. We also supported our good friends at Distinct Detail Co. with debuting their new brand of boutique car care products on our booth – they’re definitely a company to watch!

This year we displayed Ben Rye’s ’57 Beetle (which we recently featured), Jack Royston’s incredible Type 3 Notchback, and of course, (with us being us) we had to have a BMW on the booth… in the form of Jack Williams’ E28, which was finished just a couple of days prior! I’ll let the photographs do the rest, sit back and enjoy…

Yeah, yeah, I know… It didn’t seem like much of a ‘Dubs’ show, but let’s face it, that argument is getting old now. Times are changing, and there just aren’t as many people building Volkswagens anymore, or at least there aren’t many stand-out builds. Ultimate Dubs is much more of a trade exhibition these days, and if companies are building BMWs, Mercs, and Jap cars, then that’s what you’re going to see. We still did our best to showcase some of our favourite VAG examples, though – but we’re always going to photograph what captures our attention and what we feel is ‘cool’. We hope you all had a fantastic weekend if you attended, and you’ll be glad to hear that our next event will be entirely Volkswagen based, as we’re heading to The Volksworld Show on the 25/26th March!

Players 10.0

Date: 18 September 2016

Location: North Weald Airfield, Essex

Words & Photos by Henry Phull

There’s one show that, undoubtedly, initiated the birth of several modified car shows in the UK… the one and only Players at North Weald Airfield. Founded by Jamie McToldridge and Carl Taylor, their vision came into fruition by hosting a new type of show that catered for all petrolheads within the clustered automotive world, but most importantly, oozing anything cool. Naturally, Players is known to have a strong presence of cars sporting Air Lift suspension and Rotiform wheels, but that’s to be expected when they are the main sponsors of the event. BUT, it’s balanced out with plenty of diversity. For example, walking into the main show, the first thing that would’ve met your eyes was a jacked up Chevy Impala lowrider. Followed by the UK’s first RWB Porsche. Then a classic Mercedes-Benz to a brand new BMW M4 on air. From a selection of Mk1 Golfs, to a Bagged Austin Healey! And people say that there’s no variation left these days? Well, I’m sorry, but that’s just plain B.S. – Jamie and Carl are two guys with quite the opposite taste in cars – put them together and you’ve got a team of incredible curators, showing us what is cool, and what’s going to ‘wow’ you as soon as you step foot into their show. Players 10.0 proved that they’ve still got it, ten years later.

So, Players remains on top with variation and unbeatable quality of cars – but, and it’s a big but, is it enough in this fast-moving automotive community? With so many new shows on the horizon, it’s clearly becoming more and more of a chore to keep up with the youngsters and new breed of car enthusiasts. With content from shows popping up on Instagram before you even have a chance to look around in person, there’s an unfortunate sense of impatience in the car scene these days. I get the feeling that the North Weald show is gradually becoming second to its younger sister, Players Classic, which is the event that seems to get bigger and better each year – plus there’s the history and motorsport heritage that comes with the location of Goodwood Motor Circuit. North Weald will always remain a special place to ourselves and others that have been part of the scene for years – but could it be time for a change of format? We’ll be supporting it nonetheless.

Edition38 Show & Shine 2016

Date: 2-4 September 2016

Location: Overstone Park, Northampton

Words & Photos by Henry Phull

It’s that time again… Edition38! This is probably the most anticipated show of the year for Volkswagen and VAG fans. It’s essentially a camping event held over a long weekend, the ideal opportunity to get together with friends and cars. Thanks to plenty of night-time entertainment, people treat it as a party weekend, followed by one of the best Show & Shines in the country at the end of it. Edition has grown so much, that each year I notice a stronger presence of cars that have travelled over from Europe. This year was no exception, as I was blown away by plenty of examples from the Netherlands, Belgium, and France which stood out from everything else – showing us Brits how it should be done. Now, due to the weather being absolutely disgusting on the Friday and Saturday of the event, we skipped them and made our way up on Sunday (the main day for Show & Shine), where the rain stayed away, luckily. Props to everyone that camped all weekend in the wet and mud – that’s dedication! Enjoy our round-up, with some of the UK and Europe’s highest quality dubs.

We sneaked in a few photographs of BMW’s, naturally, as you can often find plenty of non-VAG cars dotted around outside the show field, trying their best to join in. Looking at Volkswagens all day can sometimes become a little boring for us – Edition is one of the few shows left that has still stuck to the ‘VAG only’ rule, but fair play to them, they are still attracting the numbers and going strong, this is was their 16th show! But it still makes you wonder – will they ever give in and let other marques be part of the show? Time will tell. Despite the rain, it looked like most people had a fantastic weekend. Thanks to the Edition38 team for having us, we’ll be back.

Dorset Volksfest 2016

Date: 8/9/10 July 2016

Location: Wareham, Dorset

We’ve been supporting Dorset Volksfest (DVF) since their first show back in 2013. Being on our doorstep, DVF brings our local Volkswagen community together over a long weekend (Friday-Sunday). It’s the perfect excuse to have a short break with family and friends and admire some awesome VW’s at the same time. The show has continued to grow, with 2016 no doubt being their biggest and best event yet. It’s even started to attract people from all over the country which is truly amazing to see – it means Richie and the DVF crew are doing something right! If you’re looking for a chilled weekend away with plenty of food & drink, trade stalls and entertainment, then this is the show for you. This year we turned up on the Sunday and set up our pop-up store – thanks to everyone that stopped by and picked up some gear! Of course, whilst juggling the store, we managed to take a look around the Show & Shine area as well as the many cool cars dotted around the show field. Here’s our highlights…

It always seems to rain on the Sunday of Dorset Volksfest… Unfortunately this year was no different and we were drenched on arrival for most of the morning. Luckily though, the afternoon cleared up and it turned into one of the warmest days of Summer yet. With a fantastic range of air-cooled Volkswagens as well as a few water-cooled gems on display, the turnout was awesome offering something for every sort of Volkswagen fan. We’d like to say a big thank you to the DVF crew for allowing us to turn up late and set up shop, and for hosting another brilliant show yet again. Not forgetting all of you that made the trip down to Wareham for the whole weekend. Let’s make 2017 even bigger!

In The Blood – Adam Hodge’s 2009 Audi S3 8P

Words & Photos by Henry Phull

If you’re from Dorset and have an interest in modified cars, then you’ll probably know of Adam Hodge. He’s one of our county’s most well known people when it comes to tasteful low cars. Being a mechanic at a VAG Specialist (VAS Works) as well as having owned twelve of these cars, he’s become the source of all information for everyone who wants help getting their A3/S3 quicker or closer to the ground. If you’re into your A3’s and S3’s, face it, you’ve heard of him. Seriously, the amount of queries he gets is mind-blowing. But when you do something so well, it’s hardly surprising that so many people want to replicate it. So, when Adam told me that his first ever car was actually an A3, I was hardly surprised! He first caused a stir a few years ago with a bright orange S3 on air ride, which was one of the first cars in the UK on AccuAir’s e-Level. After that he switched back to static suspension with a gorgeous TT which did the rounds last year, but he still can’t seem to get the S3 out of his system. At the beginning of 2016 he went and picked up another example, but his time he’s opted for a more subtle, OEM+ approach.

Adam has loved the brand ever since his first car, and it’s not difficult to appreciate why, with Audi’s notorious build quality and styling. Plus working at a VAG specialist has its perks when it comes to working on the car and especially when things go wrong, which makes perfect sense as to why Adam has never really moved away from the manufacturer. “I’ve modified every car I’ve owned” he tells me, “I’ve only usually done small bits and bobs but since doing the orange S3 I’ve always felt like I’ve had to raise the bar on each build I do”.

In fact, his life completely evolves around cars. He works on them all day at work and then spends most evenings doing private jobs – the life of a mechanic! Then when he gets home, he’s forever talking to people about cars. “I love all the friends I have met through the cars/shows and will carry on with it for a long time” Adam says. Therefore, free time to work on his own car is actually very limited.

As he’d built the orange S3 previously, he knew what would and wouldn’t work this time around. In fact, he even started purchasing parts for the new car before he’d even found one to buy, as he had a vision in his head. The right car finally came along, which happened to be one the best spec’d S3’s in the country at the time, a 2009 S3 8P finished in Phantom Black. The original seller was bombarded with potential buyers as soon as it was listed online, but luckily Adam got there first. Along with a great history, factory wingback seats and nav, the car did look a little tired from the outside – but with a proper detail and some time with the dent removal man, it looked as good as new.

Adam has owned four cars on air ride, but prior to this S3, he became a dealer for AH Exclusive H&R Ultralow coilovers, so it made perfect sense to run them on his own car to demonstrate just what the suspension can do. However, getting the car to sit this low was much more technical than just fitting the coilovers, mostly because he wanted to run 20″ wheels, just to make things more difficult for himself! “Getting a car this low on 20″ wheels is far from easy… running 18″ and even 19″ wheels on this chassis is a piece of cake but 20″ is another ball game” he explains. With the rears doable, the problem laid with the front fitment.

In order to allow the front to be lowered enough, Adam opted for a pair of SRS-Tech front arches, which are 30mm wider, giving the wheels clearance and making the car look more menacing. These were colour coded by Scott at Specialist Paintworks along with the front bumper to eradicate any stone chips. Alas, it still wasn’t sitting right until he enlisted the services of Paul at Coltech Classics for a chassis notch on the drivers side. Finished off with a full suspension geometry, the S3 finally sat and drove just right.

Deciding on which 20″ wheels to go for was frustrating for Adam. Initially he wanted a set of OZ wheels, but nothing in 20″ was coming up for sale. Plus, everyone seemed to be jumping on to the ‘Motorsport look’ bandwagon. So, and rightfully so, he decided on an OEM+ theme for this car. A genuine set of 20×8.5j Audi Rotor Arm alloys came up for sale, which were in quite a state – so he picked them up for a bargain and had The Wheel Specialist Bournemouth work their magic and bring them back to new. Add a set of 225/30/20 Nankang NS2 tyres for just the right amount of stretch and they look right at home on Adam’s car.

IMG_6169

With five-spoke wheels like the Audi Rotors, it leaves the factory brakes completely exposed. Adam decided to replace these with a big brake kit. Up front he sourced and fitted RS7 6-pot callipers along with 390mm RS7 wavey discs, finished with Ferodo DS2500 pads and custom machined front brackets to make everything fit perfectly. To compliment the front brakes, the rears have also been replaced with Lamborghini 4-port callipers, an additional Ferrari F458 handbrake calliper with Lamborghini 356mm discs and more Ferodo DS2500 pads. These were fitted to the car with custom Vagbremtechnic rear brackets. The result is stunning, with painted yellow callipers demonstrating that this isn’t a normal S3.

With the car finally looking as he had imagined it would, it was time to address the power. Adam remaps Audi’s for a living at work, so it was blatantly going to happen. He added a Revo intake, Scorpion downpipe and decat, Milltek non res cat-back with ceramic black tips, furthermore he installed Autotech fuel pump internals and an RS4 fuel return valve, Audi R8 coilpacks and a CTS turbo outlet pipe. All these modifications came to life with a Revo stage2+ map which completely transformed the responsiveness and overall power of the car.

IMG_6226

With the car already so high spec’d from the factory with heated Wingback seats, Adam didn’t want to do much in the way of changes. Just a few refined mods have been installed, which most people won’t notice, but they really do make the interior pop. This includes carbon door inlays in the front and rear, a carbon ashtray cover and carbon gear gator surround. Plus, the centre console knee braces and steering wheel centre trims have all been painted gloss black.

The carbon theme continues on the exterior, with the addition of carbon wing mirrors – which he prefers to the genuine silver mirrors found on most S/RS vehicles. Some may also notice the carbon B pillars, a rear wiper delete and genuine RS3 grill up front. It’s all about the subtle touches for Adam, with nothing too in your face. Besides, he’s done that before with the old S3. As I said before, his cars are maturing just as he is… in the best possible way.

IMG_6466

There’s something about seeing a slammed static car rolling… Naturally I had to take a few shots along the dual carriageway, just so you can see how it transforms and shows off the big brakes. It’s restrained but completely in your face at the same time. It’s a seriously aggressive, sophisticated and cool car, so hat’s off to Adam on what I think is his best build yet. The question is, how long will he hold on to this one? With talks of another TT.. or even switching brands altogether.. who knows? But I have a feeling if he does ever sell this beauty, he’ll still end up in another in the near future. They’re in his blood.

Eurosunday 2016

Date: 29 May 2016

Location: Lommel, Belgium

Words & Photos by Henry Phull

Last year was my first outing to Europe to experience a car show, it was a last minute decision to head over to Lommel in Belgium with my friend Mark in just one day. The show completely blew me away, and I knew that it would be on my list for this year. After speaking with the organiser, Kristof, I decided it would be worthwhile to trade at the event, a perfect opportunity to offer our European fans a chance to pick up some clothing without having to pay the overseas shipping charges. Naturally, in addition to setting up our pop-up store, I wanted to make the event coverage just as special as last year’s. Therefore, this is one our longest articles yet – so a WIFI connection is recommended before you continue, unless you’ve got unlimited data! You’ll notice the best thing about Euro shows is the pure variation. The Europeans don’t seem to limit themselves at all, so you’ll see plenty of newer Mercedes-Benz’s, Jaguars and even new Fords on air ride – it’s pretty incredible to see, really, as well as the classic cars that have received pristine makeovers. Plus everything in between. With so much to capture, this article highlights the cars that made the event so special for us…

What a turn out, don’t you think? Especially when the afternoon turned into rain showers, which was rather disappointing, although this didn’t seem to stop the attendees. Considering the poor forecast and dim day, the quality and quantity of cars was still incredible and bigger than a lot of UK shows. We all love Euro shows so much, it wasn’t surprising to see handfuls of British cars making it over for the weekend, too. So, if you’re thinking about heading over to Europe, Eurosunday in Lommel is definitely worth it. There’s plenty of accommodation locally for a nice weekend away which works out super cheap if you’re in a group, alternatively stay in Antwerp the night before like we did. It’s really not that far from the Eurotunnel/ferry. Anyway, thanks to Kristof and the whole Eurosunday team for having us. We’ll be back for the next chapter!

Early Edition 2016

Date: 24 April 2016

Location: The Saints, Franklin’s Gardens, Northampton

Words & Photos by Henry Phull

When April comes around, the talk and excitement building up to Early Edition echoes throughout social media. It’s not surprising, as ‘EE’ is the next biggest event to follow Ultimate Dubs back in March. If you missed that, then EE is the show to debut your car at, and let’s face it, it’s still early on in the show calendar. Held at The Saints stadium in Northampton, the Edition38 crew take over the venue every year to host the pre-show to their established Edition38 ‘Show & Shine’ later on in the year. However, Early Edition has grown considerably over the past couple of years, making it nearly as big. Well, usually that is… This year was a little different, but more on that later! As per usual, we were surrounded by an outstanding selection of cars, traders, food and drink (including the all-important bar), plus glorious weather. We tried to capture as much as we could from the main show itself, in addition to the surrounding car parks with anything that took our fancy.

If you are reading this but didn’t actually attend the show, it may look like it was rather busy from the photographs. In reality, the turnout at this year’s Early Edition was unfortunately about half of what it has been in the past. Who knows what could have actually caused this, but we think it might have had something to do with a lot of the usual suspects heading to Wörthersee in Austria earlier than usual. We also heard that the Show & Shine had changed to a pre-booked method – maybe most people didn’t know about this? With most of the public car parks full of perfectly worthy cars, the show venue itself had plenty of empty spots that could have easily accommodated them. All in all, it was rather disappointing and there was a definite feeling of this in the air from most people we spoke with. But what can you do…? Shit happens as we all know. No doubt the Edition38 team will learn from this and come back bigger than ever next year. We will still be there and you should be too!

Early Edition 2015

Words & Photos by Henry Phull

Edition38’s Show and Shine is quite some time away, but why should we have to wait until then? Luckily the organisers of one of the Summer’s biggest VAG shows seem to share this view, and yet again saved us from our show blues with their newer show, Early Edition, which kicked off as usual at The Saints stadium in Northampton. Early Edition has always been a relatively small show, it is of course mainly a warm up event for the big one later on in the year. But unsurprisingly, it is forever growing. The attendance, like last year, was off the chain. They’ve had to expand the show ground itself to give everyone more space, which means even more show cars. Also I’m not sure if it’s just me, but I much prefer shows that are on tarmac, it’s where cars belong, right? It always beats shooting a car on a grass field.

On to the show, and I’ll start things off with Oxford Car Audio’s awesome Audi S5 demo car, sitting on Air Lift bags and Avant Garde F541 SPEC1 wheels.

Opposite, Joe Caudwell’s supercharged Audi RS5 was equally jaw dropping, bagged by Plush Automotive with AccuAir suspension and also rocking a set of Avant Garde carbon split rims, F431 SPEC2’s. I think the dude on the floor must’ve been eyeing up some brakes.. ha.

I loved the colour of Jak Johnston’s LHD 1981 Mk1 Golf GL and I’m looking forward to seeing it on a set of BBS E49’s in the very near future!

I was admiring Dale Buckley’s Mk1 Audi TT back at Ultimate Dubs, but it was nice to finally see that fresh new colour outdoors. It looks even better than I’d previously thought, along with those gorgeous BBS RS’s.

The recent addition of Rotiform LHR’s have done great things for Will Smith’s Polo, which is still one of the cleanest 6N2’s you’ll ever come across.

It is refreshing to see that more and more air-cooled cars are being accepted into the community, here we have Aneysha Wakelin’s ’64 and Kirsty Greatrex’s ’69 Beetles.

For me personally, Matty Loveridge’s Miami Blue Mk1 Golf swallowtail was car of the show. I’ve always had a soft spot for this car back when it was on BBS RS’, but he’s recently added a super cool set of Compomotive Turbo’s and bagged the car on Air Lift suspension. I thought it’d be difficult to top what he already had, but Matty has done it. And to perfection.

You’ve gotta love a bagged Audi Avant, Nick Bulmer’s A4 here on huge 20″ BBS RS2’s and AccuAir suspension.

Adam Wyatt unveiled the new look for his Vento only very recently at Ultimate Dubs, but it looks like he’s already changed the wheels to a set of Advan 3 spokes which work incredibly well.

Continuing with the ‘traffic light’ colours, check out Matt Woodgate’s A4 on Air Lift suspension and Rotiform splits finished completely in black.

Finishing up with those colours is Luke Polyblank’s bagged Mk2 Golf on a gorgeous set of Gotti’s. I love the rear heckblende which really pulls the body striping together.

Over on the StillStatic stand, VRS Northampton’s Mk7 Golf R stopped me in my tracks. It must be the lowest static Golf R around, surely? Finished off nicely with big brakes and mbDESIGN wheels.

The colour combination of Nick Ackroyd’s Scirocco was something else… Viper Green paintwork and gold centred Rotiform CSW’s, what a thing of beauty. Along with an interior and boot build by RIIVA Design and EDGE Automotive, this car everything you could want in a show car.

BBS E50’s have to be one of the all time greatest wheel designs, which go so well on Jason Buckley’s Mk1 Golf. Early Edition was certainly a haven for all kinds of Mk1 goodness.

I’m starting to see that glorious signature ceramic polished finish on a lot of wheels recently, all hailing from the guys at Felgen Werkes. Here’s Tim Smith’s Mk4 R32 rocking his finished set of WatercooledIND’s.

And look, another ceramic polish finish on Kats Giles’ widened Mk5 Golf… although this time with a stunning set of Rotiform LHR’s.

Over on the Players’ stand, I’m glad Kiran Mistry got his Mk1 back on the road after an unfortunate incident prior to Ultimate Dubs a couple of month’s ago. It’s now looking awesome.

It’s pretty cool to see a bagged Seat Leon, as they’re not a car you see that often. Nicola Sidney’s Mk2 shown here on an eye-catching set of OZ Pegasus splits.

And believe it or not, more pink wheels… D2 Forged on Mark Lampard’s bagged Audi TTS.

You thought I was done with the Mk1’s? Too bad.. there’s more to come. Jacob Moore’s example was getting a lot of attention due to its classic BBS combo, absolutely timeless.

Shaking up the game, however, was Route 32’s immaculate Mk1, which has been around for a while now, and always popular due to that R32 engine conversion and stunning interior. This year they’ve added a set of custom B-Star wheels which look incredible on the car, especially with that contrasting turquoise centre colour.

I do enjoy seeing people think outside the box of the ‘usual wheels’, and making different choices. There’s so many wheels out there. The 20″ OZ Superturismo’s work great on this bagged Scirocco.

More of that Felgen Werkes polished magic on Georgie Marlow’s BBS RM’s complimenting her Mk1.

The second time I’ve seen Auto Finesse’s Air Lift equipped Mk2 demo car, and it looks even better in daylight. That BBS bodykit really makes the car!

So I’ve shown you my highlights of the show, now I’m going to take you outside into the surrounding car parks where there’s more wonderful cars to see, including lots of non-VAG. I’ll start with Olly Snow’s stunning Mulberry Mk3 VR6 on BBS RS.

Considering what bargains S8’s are nowadays, I’m surprised we’re not seeing more of them. Billy Hilton just slammed his awesome example on KW coilovers and 20″ Rotiform SNA’s.

It’s a car we all saw a lot of last year, and a relief to finally see back out again… Becky Evans’ beautiful BMW E21 bagged on BBS RS.

The VIP Modular VX210 wheels on Mark Gunning’s Audi A5 are monstrous, check out the size of those lips! Bagged by Only Charged Dubs, this car sits extremely well too.

Some more handiwork from Only Charged Dubs, with Josh Hall’s Mk6 on Autostrada Modena’s.

These BBS GT004’s looked glorious on Myles Collins’ R32.

It’s been a while since I’ve shot James Aveil’s Mercedes W114, I love this thing.

Of course there’s Rory Hamilton’s W115, too. These two looked fantastic together and it’s cool to see more of these big Mercs already this year.

I really dig Alex Herman’s E46 M Sport, it really suits those 2-piece OZ Mito Type 3’s.

Here’s a double whammy of white centred BBS RF’s, firstly on a pre-facelift E36 ‘vert…

And another set working equally well on Alex Hurd’s bagged E46 M Sport.

Steven Doe made the trip from down South in his stunning BMW E21, bagged on CCW wheels. I’ve shot the car a lot already this year, but it’s still a clear favourite.

Parked alongside was Chris Phillips static Lexus IS300, looking incredible on stepped-up BBS RS. Chris has recently fitted some Vertex skirts which makes it hard to believe this car is static.. tough as hell!

Being a BMW enthusiast myself, something like this will always make my heart melt. I loved Jake Ryan’s 318is, bagged and on OZ Futura’s. A strong look.

I’ll finish up with some LikeHell Design repping, starting off with Jamie Hitchcock’s static BMW Z4 that we recently featured (click here to check out the feature).

And more WORK wheels on Josh Mussell’s (the man behind LikeHell) static Nissan 350Z.

This was the first time I’d come across this, but that white centred WORK Meister look seems to work on a lot of platforms. Check out Nath Howell’s bagged Subaru Impreza. Cool or what!?

Finally, Jordan O’Sullivan’s R53 Mini Cooper S on Carline CM6’s remains to be one of the nicest Mini’s out there.

That’s it for our Early Edition coverage. As usual, the event was huge… just imagine how big Edition38 is going to be later on in the year. Unlike Ultimate Dubs, the organisers here didn’t allow ANY non-VAG into the main show this time, even on trade stands. How do you feel about this? We want to know, leave your thoughts in the comments. However we’re still glad that there was such a large turnout even in the car park, it shows you’re all interested nonetheless. Thanks to Edition38 for having us, we’ll see you again at the main Show and Shine on 4/5/6 September. Next up on our agenda is The Car Show Collective’s ‘Show of Shows’ in Kent on the 17th May. Don’t miss it!

Ultimate Dubs 2015 – Part 3

Words & Photos by Henry Phull

Welcome back, to the final part of our Ultimate Dubs 2015 coverage. What a fantastic weekend it was for everyone, catching up with friends and checking out people’s new builds. We’ve already taken you through the outside areas and two main exhibition halls, which leaves us with two remaining indoor areas, which are mostly occupied by the traders. The quality of cars keeps on getting better and better, with ridiculously high standards in every class. We’re still amazed how much money is being thrown into new builds every year. Anyway, let’s check them out… Grab a cuppa, get comfy, and enjoy…

We’ll start in the exclusive carpeted hall, always dimly lit – annoying for photographers, but the cars do look incredible under the light. The first car that grabbed our attention was Matt Glassup’s Porsche 911 (964) sitting on a mint set of widened Eta Betas with Rotiform finished centres.

Over on the ‘I Love Bass’ stand, Niall O’Dowd’s Porsche Cayman S took things to the next level, with a hydraulic suspension install and Rotiforms!

The VRS Northampton Mk7 Golf R on the StillStatic stand was looking mean, with a big brake upgrade, StillStatic coilovers and mbDESIGN wheels.

Alongside was this brutal Audi B7 A4 on a gorgeous set of 20″ Vossens.

We loved this Audi S3 on custom BBS Super RS’. Is it just us, or is there a bit of a gold wheel vibe going on this year?

Check out Clark Thurman’s bagged Mk1 Caddy on Keskin KT1s, which we first papped at last year’s Show & Glow event.

We were pretty stoked to see this, Kevve Raekelboom’s AccuAir equiped BMW E30 on the Wheel Whores stand, although the car is still a work-in-progress, it’s already looking to be an incredible build. The brown VIP Modular VXS210 wheels certainly make it stand out from the crowded E30 scene.

In Part 2, we mentioned that there are some cars that you keep seeing throughout their build process, whether it’s through Instagram or Facebook… Steven Doe’s E21 is another of these cars, so it was awesome to finally see it finished and on display. Bagged, but switching things up from the norm and opting for CCW wheels, it is one beautifully executed project.

Continuing along the Wheel Whores stand, we bumped into Adrian May’s US spec Mk3 Golf, we loved the paintwork on this along with the Corvette salad shooter wheels.

Dan Taylor’s E46 M3 was the centre of attention sitting super low on Broadway Static coilovers and a lovely set of OZ Futura splits.

Check out the new in-your-face Fatlace wrap by JD Wraps on the Players Show S14, along with a colour switch up on the awesome Rotiform TMBs.

Jamie McToldridge’s Mk1 Golf was equally eye-catching sitting alongside it…

Over on the Meguairs stand, Greg Howell’s Porsche 911 was sparkling due to his impressive paint, on KW V3 Ultra Lows + HLS 4 (Hydraulic Lift System) and 19″ BBS E88s splits.

We actually captured this last year at Ultimate Stance when the car was in a completely different state, but still cool nonetheless. Rory Hamilton has put his Mercedes W115 240D through a complete transformation over the winter, including a full respray and a beautiful set of BBS Mahle wheels which add to the car to no end.

We see it a lot, but Richie Payne’s ‘Milestone71’ Porsche 911 is one 964 we never tire of seeing. This is as close to Porsche perfection as you can get.

Never have we seen so many 964’s at one show.. We also loved this black beauty on Voodoo’s stand, demonstrating some of Elie’s split rim handiwork.

Heading over to the Radioworld stand, their Nissan GTR was certainly unique, being on D2 air suspension and a set of 20″ D2 Racing Forged OS02 wheels.

Not forgetting the E38 740i, also on D2 air suspension. We shot this back at Ultimate Stance, and it’s now rocking an Alpina splitter, amber corners and D2 Racing TS-05 wheels. One badass car.

Check out this incredible BMW M4 on the BC Forged Wheels UK / Swissvax UK stand, on H&R suspension and BC HB09 wheels in custom gloss black and BMW Sakhir Orange to match the car.

Kay Singh was along in a black E30 M3, parked up next to the M4, on a classic set of BBS RS with yes, you guessed it, gold centres! A flawless example of a truly heroic motorsport icon.

Props to the guys at Plush Automotive, for going all out on Ollie Manuello’s Audi R8. Who’d have thought AccuAir suspension and BBS magnesium E28s would look this good on a supercar.

The standard continues with this 700hp Audi RS6, again on AccuAir and HP Drivetech suspension and ADV1 wheels.

We also loved Justin Appleford’s bagged Audi RS5, which was tucking huge 21″ BC Forged HB-R5s!

This Mk6 Golf wagon on the Dub Fiction stand caught us by surprise, sitting very nicely on air and Cast13 RB2 wheels.

Gepfeffert UK had an incredible Audi S3 on their stand which some of you may remember seeing last year with a different guise. It’s now slammed on Gepfeffert’s very own HLS 140 slam kit.

We caught up with Car Audio & Security a few weeks ago back at their ‘Caffeine & Cars’ event, but we had to of course take a couple of snaps of their rides again. Check out their Air Lift bagged Mk5 Golf on the new Rotiform SPF wheels – they go together so well.

Parm switched up the wheels on his stunning new RS4 Avant with a set of double dark tint IND-Ts. Click here to check out our coverage from the ‘Caffeine & Cars’ event for more on this car and boot install.

The copper plated Rotiform SPFs on this B7 RS4 were definitely out of this world and super cool!

So that just about finalises our round up of the year’s show starter. We had a fantastic weekend overall. Ultimate Dubs is always the busiest show and the buzz it creates is just amazing. From the quality of cars debuting here, the car community is certainly on the way to a very exciting year ahead. Follow us on Instagram and Facebook to stay up to date on our latest car show visits. Next up is VolksWorld for a check up on the air-cooled community. Stay tuned!
