Edition38 Show & Shine 2017

Edition38 is the go-to weekender for anyone interested in Volkswagens (and all other VAG cars of course). Although the majority of show-goers tend to look forward to the camping and nightlife shenanigans, E38’s Show & Shine brings some of the highest quality cars from all over the UK and Europe (in fact, the Euro turnout seems to grow significantly year on year). Every time I drive into Overstone Park, I’m greeted to that distinctly chilled, summertime vibe which I’ve come to love… 2017’s event was no different. Albeit noticeably quieter than previous years, the showground was still full of some incredible metal which kept me occupied all day. With a live-stage providing music and inviting owners and their cars up to talk about their builds, there’s plenty going on in the background whilst you’re left to check out the cars in the sun. Edition38 Show & Shine 2016

It’s that time again… Edition38! This is probably the most anticipated show of the year for Volkswagen and VAG fans. It’s essentially a camping event held over a long weekend, the ideal opportunity to get together with friends and cars. Thanks to plenty of night-time entertainment, people treat it as a party weekend, followed by one of the best Show & Shines in the country at the end of it. Edition has grown so much, that each year I notice a stronger presence of cars that have travelled over from Europe. This year was no exception, as I was blown away by plenty of examples from the Netherlands, Belgium, and France which stood out from everything else – showing us Brits how it should be done. Now, due to the weather being absolutely disgusting on the Friday and Saturday of the event, we skipped them and made our way up on Sunday (the main day for Show & Shine), where the rain stayed away, luckily. Props to everyone that camped all weekend in the wet and mud – that’s dedication! Enjoy our round-up, with some of the UK and Europe’s highest quality dubs.

We sneaked in a few photographs of BMW’s, naturally, as you can often find plenty of non-VAG cars dotted around outside the show field, trying their best to join in. Looking at Volkswagens all day can sometimes become a little boring for us – Edition is one of the few shows left that has still stuck to the ‘VAG only’ rule, but fair play to them, they are still attracting the numbers and going strong, this is was their 16th show! But it still makes you wonder – will they ever give in and let other marques be part of the show? Time will tell. Despite the rain, it looked like most people had a fantastic weekend. Thanks to the Edition38 team for having us, we’ll be back.

Retro Rides Gathering 2016

It’s that time of year where we take a break from the usual shenanigans of static ‘stance-orientated’ car shows, and head deep into the British countryside… more specifically, the idyllic Shelsley Walsh in Worcester, to the historic hill climb. It’s here that every year, members of the Retro Rides forums get together for one big event, the ‘Gathering’. Now, this isn’t like any typical car show. Here you’ll find cars that you won’t see anywhere else, in fact, a lot of them only attend this one event on the calendar, and I’m pretty sure a lot of them aren’t even that active on social media. I know right, that sort of messes up our usual style of event coverage, but let’s go with it. Anyway, I’ve been attending the Retro Rides Gathering since 2013, and it just keeps getting better, year on year (regardless of the weather). Over this time I’ve noticed that more and more classic car enthusiasts are finding out about this motorsport-orientated event, bringing a higher calibre of cars each time I visit.

 

IF IT’S RETRO, IT’S COOL…

 

It’s as simple as that. There’s a huge sense of appreciation for all marques at this event – and no whining about what and what isn’t acceptable like in the VAG scene. You’ll see everything from rat-look to fully prepped race cars. And it’s not just the high-performance cars that get a go up the hill climb either, the variety of cars can be hilarious at times – even a hearse went up this year (which you’ll find below)! I’ve done my best to select the images that show off what the Gathering is all about… A broad range of cars, but still focusing on what you guys and gals come to Slam Sanctuary for. ON TO THE CLUB FIELD…

 

If the burnouts, tyre smoke and the sound of cars going up the hill climb get a bit too much, there’s always a chance to take a stroll through the club field. Now, unlike most static car shows, the display part of the Gathering is made up of club stands – these are pre-booked prior to the event. This works really well, guaranteeing groups of friends the ability to park up together for the day. There’s also a “Retro Parking” area, too, which allows cars that turn up on the day to still be involved.

There’s not much more I can say really, other than if you haven’t been to Retro Rides Gathering before, don’t let yourself miss it again – book it in the diary for next year. You’ll be amazed by the unmatchable vibe that it possesses. With wacky, rare and intriguing cars, it’s completely different to any other automotive event on the calendar, something I constantly tell people when they ask about it. We will be back again next year, without a doubt.

FittedUK 2016 – Part 2

Welcome back to our FittedUK coverage – in this final part I’ll take you through the remaining highlights from the incredible show at EventCity, the new location for 2016. You’ve already seen that the event was full of high quality cars and now it’s about to get even better. It’s time to take a look into the carpeted hall, show a few gems that we missed from the rest of the venue and even more of the cars from the Slam Sanctuary booth. There’s something special about an event of this size. All the excess space glorifies the cars on show, allowing you to fully admire them. When they’re squashed together (like at a lot of smaller shows) you’re much more likely to walk straight past or pay less attention. FittedUK was like an art exhibition for cars… They truly nailed what a static automotive event should be. Anyway, on to the all-important photos…

Apparently next year’s show will have cars hanging from the ceiling! When I first heard that, I thought “really…?” but after seeing what these guys can pull off, I wouldn’t be surprised if they get it done. VW Days 2016

This year is all about the European car shows here at Slam Sanctuary. I’d heard numerous good things about VW Days, which is organised every year by ‘Club Golf Ile de France’ and held in a quiet town just outside of Saint Quentin. This is nice for us Brits as the venue is less than a two-hour drive from the Calais terminal, and essentially one stress-free smooth toll road. Being a two day event, we set off on the Saturday morning from the Eurotunnel and decided to stay overnight in a hotel just ten minutes away, although for a majority of the show goers, it’s all about the camping experience. This year though, the weather on Saturday was horrendous – so I’m glad I had a hotel room! The rain put a few people off on day one making it a washout, but come Sunday the sun was out and the show transformed into something epic. I even came home with some sunburn! Much like when we were in Belgium, it was a nice change to see what the Europeans are building.  To adhere to the name VW Days, the event is very VAG-orientated, understandably, with a few exceptions that you’ll find throughout the article. All in all, I was blown away by the variety of builds and the sheer size of the show. Here are the cars that stood out from the crowd…

What a variation, right? The quality of cars was just phenomenal, and it’s hardly surprising that so many people from the UK make the trip over for VW Days. It’s a petrolhead’s dream short break, whether you camp and enjoy the party onsite, or decide to hotel it and experience the local town that becomes completely taken over by modified cars from all over Europe – similar to a mini-Wörthersee in fact. Many thanks to Club Golf IDF for having us, we’ll certainly be back again! Our next European adventure will take us to M.I.V.W. in August. Until then, see you all at the coming UK events.

Players Classic 2016

Players Classic 2016 is a big one for me, it marks the 3 year anniversary of Slam Sanctuary, as this was the show that kickstarted my love of photographing cars. Since then the car scene has come a huge way in terms of quality and builds, just as this show has. Every year the team somehow seem to take over more and more of the Goodwood Motor Circuit grounds to the point where you’ll fail to find a patch of land that isn’t taken up by a show car. Players Classic is the biggest show of the year since Ultimate Dubs back at the start of the season. It’s become so popular that a lot of the show is now largely filled with cars that have made the journey over from Europe. Also, Players is so well-known in the car world that people even fly over from the USA to check out the show and network. It’s become one of the coolest events on the calendar, much down to the venue itself and of course the incredible diversity of cars that are selected and shown throughout Goodwood’s historic paddock. In addition to numerous companies trading in the exclusive ‘Trade Village’ (including us this year!), ‘Classic’ combines a static show with plenty of track action including the pre-booked track day experience and various drifting displays throughout the day – plenty to keep you entertained. That just about sums up our highlights of 2016’s show. Jamie, Carl and the rest of the Players team absolutely smashed it again. They’ve got that ‘chilled’ show vibe perfected, which makes it a pleasure to attend year on year. I must’ve bumped in to 90% of the people I know through cars and the automotive industry which just goes to show that people really do love this event. Catering for all motoring fans (even those who prefer two wheels), there’s something for everyone. If you missed it, then don’t worry… Players is back with their main show later this year at North Weald, Essex on the 18th of September 2016. Eurosunday 2016

Last year was my first outing to Europe to experience a car show, it was a last minute decision to head over to Lommel in Belgium with my friend Mark in just one day. The show completely blew me away, and I knew that it would be on my list for this year. After speaking with the organiser, Kristof, I decided it would be worthwhile to trade at the event, a perfect opportunity to offer our European fans a chance to pick up some clothing without having to pay the overseas shipping charges. Naturally, in addition to setting up our pop-up store, I wanted to make the event coverage just as special as last year’s. Therefore, this is one our longest articles yet – so a WIFI connection is recommended before you continue, unless you’ve got unlimited data! You’ll notice the best thing about Euro shows is the pure variation. The Europeans don’t seem to limit themselves at all, so you’ll see plenty of newer Mercedes-Benz’s, Jaguars and even new Fords on air ride – it’s pretty incredible to see, really, as well as the classic cars that have received pristine makeovers. What a turn out, don’t you think? Especially when the afternoon turned into rain showers, which was rather disappointing, although this didn’t seem to stop the attendees. Considering the poor forecast and dim day, the quality and quantity of cars was still incredible and bigger than a lot of UK shows. We all love Euro shows so much, it wasn’t surprising to see handfuls of British cars making it over for the weekend, too. So, if you’re thinking about heading over to Europe, Eurosunday in Lommel is definitely worth it. There’s plenty of accommodation locally for a nice weekend away which works out super cheap if you’re in a group, alternatively stay in Antwerp the night before like we did. It’s really not that far from the Eurotunnel/ferry. Anyway, thanks to Kristof and the whole Eurosunday team for having us. We’ll be back for the next chapter!

Stance Fever 2016

Back in January I had a message from my friend Faz, the co-organiser behind Stance Fever, mentioning that he was putting on a bigger and better show for 2016. The event originally debuted at the Ace Cafe in London, then moved to Essex in 2015, so this year had to be something even bigger. Bigger is definitely the word… This year Stance Fever moved to the famous Rockingham Speedway in Corby, Northamptonshire. With plenty of excitement in the air, we decided to join forces and agree to attend with our pop-up store for this years show. Plus, it was the first outing for our new Audi A6 Avant hauler, even if it did break down on the way home, but I won’t bore you with the details. Take a look at our highlights from the day – the mix of cars was quite something, with a huge variety of marques catered for.

Early Edition 2016

When April comes around, the talk and excitement building up to Early Edition echoes throughout social media. It’s not surprising, as ‘EE’ is the next biggest event to follow Ultimate Dubs back in March. If you missed that, then EE is the show to debut your car at, and let’s face it, it’s still early on in the show calendar. Held at The Saints stadium in Northampton, the Edition38 crew take over the venue every year to host the pre-show to their established Edition38 ‘Show & Shine’ later on in the year. However, Early Edition has grown considerably over the past couple of years, making it nearly as big. Well, usually that is… This year was a little different, but more on that later! As per usual, we were surrounded by an outstanding selection of cars, traders, food and drink (including the all-important bar), plus glorious weather. We tried to capture as much as we could from the main show itself, in addition to the surrounding car parks with anything that took our fancy.

If you are reading this but didn’t actually attend the show, it may look like it was rather busy from the photographs. In reality, the turnout at this year’s Early Edition was unfortunately about half of what it has been in the past. Who knows what could have actually caused this, but we think it might have had something to do with a lot of the usual suspects heading to Wörthersee in Austria earlier than usual. We also heard that the Show & Shine had changed to a pre-booked method – maybe most people didn’t know about this? With most of the public car parks full of perfectly worthy cars, the show venue itself had plenty of empty spots that could have easily accommodated them. All in all, it was rather disappointing and there was a definite feeling of this in the air from most people we spoke with. But what can you do…? Shit happens as we all know. No doubt the Edition38 team will learn from this and come back bigger than ever next year. We will still be there and you should be too!

Eurosunday 2015

Eurosunday is one of those European shows I’ve been wanting to go to ever since I started Slam Sanctuary. It’s the show that everyone always raves to me about. I thought I’d be missing it yet again this year – mainly due to low funds having recently spent too much on my project car. Sounds familiar, right? However, flashback to 8pm on the Saturday night before the show, and I received a message from my friend Mark saying “Eurosunday….?”. After a few minutes of laughing at each other, we checked the Euro Tunnel prices, £60 return. Doable! Belgium and back in one day… it seemed like madness, considering we are all the way in Bournemouth – 170 miles from Folkestone. But thinking about it, what else were we going to do on a Sunday? Alarms set for 3.30am, we set off at 4am and thrashed the Mk4 to the Euro Tunnel, with a McDonald’s breakfast and coffee stop tied in of course. To our dismay and after our stupidly early start, we arrived at the Euro Tunnel terminal only to be told there were delays of up to two hours… we weren’t impressed!

 

 

Once we finally boarded the train, a brief 40 minutes later we were in Calais, and set off straight away to the show venue. As we were now running late, we gunned it through the short stretch of France and over the border, making our way past Antwerp and then through the delightful countryside into Lommel. We only stopped once for a toilet break by the side of the road! The venue itself was situated in the nearby industrial estate, completely abandoned from the public, making it an ideal venue to host a car show.

 

We arrived just after Midday, and I was shocked at the sheer amount of cars in the show, it was definitely bigger than anything I’m used to in the UK. Plus to make things even better, it was super hot. After a quick glance at the cars whilst queuing to get in, we both knew we’d made the right decision to do this crazy last minute trip. That sums up my Eurosunday highlights, hopefully you enjoyed my selection! We stuck around for a short while after the show but then remembered that we had another train to catch, so we hit the road again. Just before we got to Antwerp we bumped into Jamie, Kiran and the rest of the Players crew in their two Mk1’s. As they were also heading for the Euro Tunnel, we decided to join their convoy. Let me tell you, following these two beauties at neck breaking speeds through Belgium and France was quite a sight! Naturally I had to grab a few rolling shots…

 

 

 

 

I’m so pleased that I finally managed to get over to Belgium for the day. Not only was it my first Eurosunday, but my first ever European car show. You know those mates that constantly go on about how much better Euro shows are? We’ve all got them… Well I’m sorry to say, but I think it’s probably true! This has just made me want to do a lot more Euro shows as soon as possible! Don’t get me wrong, I love the UK shows, but it was certainly nice to mix things up a bit and see some cars I’m not used to seeing. On that note, I’d recommend it to anyone. Hopefully Slam Sanctuary will be back next year!
