Lionel Racey – Carl Shakespeare’s 1996 Volkswagen Mk3 Golf VR6

This isn’t the typical kind of car that you’d expect to see gracing our digital pages here on Slam Sanctuary. It’s… how do I put it? Less ‘stancey’ than our usual spotlight features. However, Carl Shakespeare (or Shakey, as he’s more commonly known) has created a stunning example of a fast-road hatchback that we just had to showcase. Let me introduce his ’96 Mk3 Golf VR6, nicknamed ‘Lionel Racey’… It not only looks the part (subtle and understated), it goes and sounds like an absolute rocket, too, with a supercharger under the hood and a recent NOS setup. Considering the car’s purpose (driving fast!), it sits just right, too. It’s an impressive overall package, and after seeing it go through some significant changes during 2016, I bided my time and waited for the right moment to get this awesome VR6 behind the lens. That time finally arrived one late afternoon in the New Forest…

 

 

But let’s start with the owner himself. Head honcho at Studio Incar, Shakey actually works on all sorts of interesting cars on a daily basis, creating mid to high end custom audio setups, bespoke upholstery, and the occasional air suspension installation. Basically, most of the cars he works on tend to be full of the latest tech. However, he usually seems to go for a complete opposite approach with his own cars. Shakey likes to drive hard, with a lot of his more recent being semi stripped-down and static, as opposed to a ‘show-car’ approach.

 

 

Shakey has been into his Volkswagens since 2004, having owned countless Mk2’s, a Mk1 (which he actually hated!), an R32 and lots of Mk3’s already, including Vento’s and Jetta’s. In between the VW’s, he’s owned a whole host of BMW M cars, too… E46 M3’s, an E39 M5, E92 M3 and E36 328i, and although he has grown attached to BMW, he always seems to come back to the Volkswagen marque. “They just have an incredible following full of amazing people, you could genuinely try and ‘give up’ Volkswagen and you’d find it very hard indeed” he tells me… “Any VW guy/girl will have a long list of friends that they’ve completely forgotten are due to the marque and are now just best, close friends. It’s that and the VW lifestyle, it’s so much calmer than any other.”

 

 

So let’s get to the Mk3… Stuck without a project car for once, Shakey was left with his daily driver and wanted to get stuck in to another build, and at the time wanted something he could use on the Studio Incar trade stands. It just so happened that a customer and now good friend of his, Christopher Sukhram, had mentioned that he had a Mk3 VR6 tucked away in his garage. He told Shakey that it had been painted and had the arches pulled slightly, which were welded flat and smoothed inside (This alone would save himself a lot of effort in the long run).

 

 

The car had been driven home from the paint shop and garaged straight away – a whole seven years prior! So, with an ideal candidate sitting right there, he badgered Christopher constantly and almost gave up. Eventually, he finally gave in and sold Shakey the car. “It hadn’t seen light for many years, a quick oil change, so I turned over by hand and it then fired. Like any VW does.” he explains.

 

 

At first, the plan with the Mk3 was to build a demo vehicle for Studio Incar, with a whole host of audio equipment, sitting on air suspension. Well, that idea didn’t last long. As soon as Shakey got the car road legal, he drove it and realised that, just like the Mk4 R32, “It makes lush noises, but it’s mind numbingly slow!” he laughs. Almost immediately, he started pulling out the interior in an early attempt to make it fast and handle better. “It’s amazing how well the car started to respond to subtle stuff.” That was settled then – it was going to be a fast road car.

 

 

Having been painted and left untouched, the condition of the Mk3 when Shakey took delivery was rather good. However, there were a few imperfections, notably the paint on the doors which was too thin and had primer showing up in direct sunlight. Therefore Shakey had New Forest Classic Cars repaint the doors along with various other parts to bring the car up-to-date. With the car being built previously to Christopher’s taste in the late 2000’s, the modifications weren’t to Shakey’s taste, so he went on to source different bumpers, side trims and grill.

 

 

After stripping the interior almost completely, Shakey installed a Wiechers cage and Recaro Pole Position seats – for which he made custom subframes that allow a low-slung height with the side mounts and work with the stock front/back adjustment. At the same time, with the help of Sam Rutter, they created custom carbon fibre door panels (real – not wrapped or dipped).

 

Under the bonnet is purely the business end – it doesn’t get cleaned unless it’s being worked on!

 

They also added some stainless steel hardware for pull handles and stitched up the door triggers and grab handles, along with some mounts for a pair of Hertz He midbass speakers (Naturally, Shakey had to get some audio in there). A Volkswagen Motorsport gear knob was also sourced from Matt at Trimsport and he also decided to switch out the stock steering wheel in favour of a boat item, which he just loves the feel of – it looks the part, too!

 

 

The new goal for the VR6 was to gain as much power as possible, which called for some supercharging action thanks to the guys at VRT, who fitted a Rotrex C-94 charger. This took a little longer to fit as it had to be sent off to have the 12psi pulley changed out for an 8psi item (a little more stock engine friendly, but still not the safest). On it’s return, Ryan (one of the owners at VRT) heroically took his own supercharged VR6 apart to supply the parts for the build. A high pressure in-tank pump was also fitted along with a ported ECU. “When I got the car back it was like I had been given a completely different car, with the weight difference and the extra 100+ HP it absolutely rocks.” Shakey recalls.

 

 

In order to cope with the newly acquired power, Shakey decided to update the braking system with ECS tuning adapters and bells/rotors, along with Porsche 996T Brembo callipers (fully rebuilt and coated) running Yellow Stuff pads. The suspension was also uprated, with a complete bush overhaul (OEM where he spec’d, and poly everywhere else). Neuspeed braces were also fitted all round in addition to H&R anti roll bars. The Golf sits on a set of Spax RSX gas filled coilovers with height and dampening adjustability. There’s also the added camber and caster adjustment on the top mounts. “These aren’t a show car shock, purposefully so they won’t go mega low – but that’s not what the car is about.” Shakey explains.

 

 

Wheels are always a difficult factor on any build, and it wasn’t easy for Shakey to make up his mind. “I originally wanted 16” BBS RS, black on black, with some big profile tyres… However, I got linked to these and I love them!”…a set of 17″ OZ Superleggera’s, which were refurbished in Satin Anthracite by The Wheel Specialist Fareham, and paired to Yokohama S-Drive 195/40 tyres all round. The wheels are spaced 3mm up front to clear the brakes, and 8mm rear left and 10mm rear right for wider track and rear beam levelling. The result is a truly aggressive one, and works perfectly with the motorport-inspired look.

 

 

At this moment in time, Shakey seems happy with the progress of the car, but with a project like this, it’s all about the driving experience and getting the maximum thrill possible. In fact, the Golf is currently at Jtech Automotive having the nitrous set up properly – which will surely take the enjoyment factor to the next level, and beyond. “There are loads of plans for the car really” he explains… “Limited slip diff, more power, built engine, 6 branch if it is to stay supercharged… You know how it goes, but I do love this car to bits right now – it’s a rapid, noisy, smelly little thing that can hold its own when cleaned up too.” With the weather finally improving, I bet he can’t wait to get back in the car and enjoy it again for the rest of the 2017 season – I can’t wait for another ride in it.

Westside Treffen 2016

Westside Treffen is the hidden gem of modified car shows in the UK. It really does surprise me how many people don’t know of its existence when I mention it. From people that have been, including all the regulars, you’ll constantly hear “Come to Westside. It’s THE most chilled out show.” Well, they ain’t lying! The quality of cars on display is usually top notch too, and that’s partly what makes this show awesome. It could also have something to do with the time of year, being the last outdoor event on the calendar, a lot of people are about to tuck their show cars away for winter. Westside is one final stage for your pride and joy to make a spectacle before the new show season (Unless you’re attending Ultimate Stance this weekend, of course – but the crowd there is slightly different). The ideology for Westside is pretty simple really. Book out a cricket club on the outskirts of West London, bring your friends and their cars (of which 80% happen to be concourse condition classic Volkswagens), get the family to help out with some incredible home-cooked food, 80s/90s music and you’re onto a winner. It’s no surprise that the show has grown year on year but still remains a small, relaxed event.

I’m really pleased that Westside has stuck to the same venue. It seems like they could move somewhere bigger every year with ease. Instead, they stick to what they know and what works. Let’s face it, there’s plenty of larger shows you can visit, but this is partly what makes Westside unique. Some worry about getting their car into the show because of the limited space – I say just turn up earlier! I think I said it in my previous article, but 2016 has not been kind to us in regards to rain… Luckily the rain stayed away for this show, but it had been chucking it down the previous night, which meant wet roads on route to the show. This blatantly put a few people off, but it just so happened that people turned up a bit later than usual. The show was heaving. I turned up, caught up with loads of friends, admired some impressive cars, and feasted on some fantastic Jamaican and Indian food. What’s not to love? If you’ve still not been to Westside, you’ve been missing out.

We’ll catch you all very soon with our booth at Ultimate Stance (Telford International Centre) on Sunday 30th October.

Auto Grüppe’s Summer Run 2016

Auto Grüppe organised an event back in 2014… the congregation of some incredible cars at Beaconsfield services on the M40, followed by a leisurely drive to the rendezvous point at Southsea seafront in Hampshire, for a chilled evening with friends and cars. To this day, it remains one of the coolest gatherings that I’ve attended in the UK. I’ve been patiently waiting for the guys to plan the next one – This year they finally got their act together and set a date for the second event. The idea was exactly the same as before (why change something that worked so well, right?), another cruise from Beaconsfield down to Southsea. I decided to skip the convoy and meet up with everyone in Southsea along with a few other Southerners, seeing as we live around the area, anyway. When I arrived, there were already plenty of modified cars trying to take over the Avenue where the meet was being held – unfortunately it was a bank holiday Monday after a big music festival held at the same location, so there were a few vans and tractors moving about and clearing up the rubbish from the weekend, but we made the most of it and it didn’t seem to spoil the vibe. To top it off, the weather was glorious.

This was the sort of evening that sticks with you.. even more so than the typical car show, and don’t worry, not your average car park meet. It was definitely refreshing to see a turnout of quality vehicles take over a picturesque Avenue – particularly when you get such a beautiful sunset in the background. I think the photos speak for themselves, so props to Auto Grüppe for hosting yet another successful ‘Summer Run’. So this has got me thinking, we already have ‘Homegrown’ in West London and ‘Dub Club’ in the Midlands… perhaps we need something like this more frequently down on the south coast. Show & Glow 2016

We’ve been supporters of Show & Glow since their first event back in 2013 when it was held at the exclusive indoor space at Bluewater shopping centre. It continued there successfully for another year, however, Bluewater then decided to abolish the space, which meant Simon and the team at Show & Glow had to search for a new venue. Luckily, something popped up nearby (still in Kent of course), the UKP Leisure Club in Sittingbourne. Although we, unfortunately, missed last year’s show, our new photographer Tristan managed to get down there last weekend. As it turns out, Show & Glow has become one of the most chilled events on the UK circuit. With some patchy weather, it was still much drier than last year, which resulted in a great turn out and a mixed variety of cars, with most hailing from the surrounding Kent and London areas. We captured some of the highlights, showing off the mixture of cars – check them out below…

Gravity 2016

Launching a new automotive event in the congested UK show circuit is a daunting task. For people that do what we do, a dedicated show is the ultimate dream and accomplishment, which our friends at Slammed UK have managed to achieve this year with their debut show ‘Gravity’. With more and more shows popping up on the calendar, the venue has become the ‘make or break’ factor. Jordan, the main man behind Slammed UK and Gravity, spent a lot of time getting it right, opting for NAEC at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire – just outside of Coventry. An ideal central location, easily accessible for the rest of the country, and with plenty of indoor space – absolutely critical now that the British weather has become as unpredictable as ever. With two halls; a VIP-style room similar to those at Ultimate Dubs, a main hall with barn-like lighting & attributes, plus a large outside area, there was a nice contrast of backdrops which makes for an overall captivating feeling. So, did Gravity exceed our expectations? I’d say so. It’s difficult to stand out from other shows, but the choice of venue completely made it for us. We don’t always want to see a perfect looking show hall, and Gravity’s main hall was different to most shows – with more of an air-cooled vibe to it, which actually worked really well with the range of cars on display. Of course, being a debut show, there were a few things that could be improved on, but that’s to be expected – I’m sure Jordan and the team now have plenty to think about and are already planning next year’s show. If you missed it, don’t think twice about attending in 2017 – Gravity is definitely one to watch.

We’ve been supporting Dorset Volksfest (DVF) since their first show back in 2013. Being on our doorstep, DVF brings our local Volkswagen community together over a long weekend (Friday-Sunday). It’s the perfect excuse to have a short break with family and friends and admire some awesome VW’s at the same time. The show has continued to grow, with 2016 no doubt being their biggest and best event yet. It’s even started to attract people from all over the country which is truly amazing to see – it means Richie and the DVF crew are doing something right! If you’re looking for a chilled weekend away with plenty of food & drink, trade stalls and entertainment, then this is the show for you. This year we turned up on the Sunday and set up our pop-up store – thanks to everyone that stopped by and picked up some gear! It always seems to rain on the Sunday of Dorset Volksfest… Unfortunately this year was no different and we were drenched on arrival for most of the morning. Luckily though, the afternoon cleared up and it turned into one of the warmest days of Summer yet. With a fantastic range of air-cooled Volkswagens as well as a few water-cooled gems on display, the turnout was awesome offering something for every sort of Volkswagen fan. We’d like to say a big thank you to the DVF crew for allowing us to turn up late and set up shop, and for hosting another brilliant show yet again. Not forgetting all of you that made the trip down to Wareham for the whole weekend. Let’s make 2017 even bigger!

VW Days 2016

This year is all about the European car shows here at Slam Sanctuary. I’d heard numerous good things about VW Days, which is organised every year by ‘Club Golf Ile de France’ and held in a quiet town just outside of Saint Quentin. This is nice for us Brits as the venue is less than a two-hour drive from the Calais terminal, and essentially one stress-free smooth toll road. Being a two day event, we set off on the Saturday morning from the Eurotunnel and decided to stay overnight in a hotel just ten minutes away, although for a majority of the show goers, it’s all about the camping experience. This year though, the weather on Saturday was horrendous – so I’m glad I had a hotel room! The rain put a few people off on day one making it a washout, but come Sunday the sun was out and the show transformed into something epic. I even came home with some sunburn! Much like when we were in Belgium, it was a nice change to see what the Europeans are building.  To adhere to the name VW Days, the event is very VAG-orientated, understandably, with a few exceptions that you’ll find throughout the article. All in all, I was blown away by the variety of builds and the sheer size of the show. Here are the cars that stood out from the crowd…

What a variation, right? The quality of cars was just phenomenal, and it’s hardly surprising that so many people from the UK make the trip over for VW Days. It’s a petrolhead’s dream short break, whether you camp and enjoy the party onsite, or decide to hotel it and experience the local town that becomes completely taken over by modified cars from all over Europe – similar to a mini-Wörthersee in fact. Many thanks to Club Golf IDF for having us, we’ll certainly be back again! Our next European adventure will take us to M.I.V.W. in August. Until then, see you all at the coming UK events.

Players Classic 2016

Players Classic 2016 is a big one for me, it marks the 3 year anniversary of Slam Sanctuary, as this was the show that kickstarted my love of photographing cars. Since then the car scene has come a huge way in terms of quality and builds, just as this show has. Every year the team somehow seem to take over more and more of the Goodwood Motor Circuit grounds to the point where you’ll fail to find a patch of land that isn’t taken up by a show car. Players Classic is the biggest show of the year since Ultimate Dubs back at the start of the season. It’s become so popular that a lot of the show is now largely filled with cars that have made the journey over from Europe. Also, Players is so well-known in the car world that people even fly over from the USA to check out the show and network. It’s become one of the coolest events on the calendar, much down to the venue itself and of course the incredible diversity of cars that are selected and shown throughout Goodwood’s historic paddock. In addition to numerous companies trading in the exclusive ‘Trade Village’ (including us this year!), ‘Classic’ combines a static show with plenty of track action including the pre-booked track day experience and various drifting displays throughout the day – plenty to keep you entertained. That just about sums up our highlights of 2016’s show. Jamie, Carl and the rest of the Players team absolutely smashed it again. They’ve got that ‘chilled’ show vibe perfected, which makes it a pleasure to attend year on year. I must’ve bumped in to 90% of the people I know through cars and the automotive industry which just goes to show that people really do love this event. Catering for all motoring fans (even those who prefer two wheels), there’s something for everyone. If you missed it, then don’t worry… Players is back with their main show later this year at North Weald, Essex on the 18th of September 2016. Keep your eyes peeled on the Players social media and website to make sure you get the chance to enter your car into the Show & Shine. We’ll see you there!

Last year was my first outing to Europe to experience a car show, it was a last minute decision to head over to Lommel in Belgium with my friend Mark in just one day. The show completely blew me away, and I knew that it would be on my list for this year. After speaking with the organiser, Kristof, I decided it would be worthwhile to trade at the event, a perfect opportunity to offer our European fans a chance to pick up some clothing without having to pay the overseas shipping charges. Naturally, in addition to setting up our pop-up store, I wanted to make the event coverage just as special as last year’s. Therefore, this is one our longest articles yet – so a WIFI connection is recommended before you continue, unless you’ve got unlimited data! You’ll notice the best thing about Euro shows is the pure variation. The Europeans don’t seem to limit themselves at all, so you’ll see plenty of newer Mercedes-Benz’s, Jaguars and even new Fords on air ride – it’s pretty incredible to see, really, as well as the classic cars that have received pristine makeovers. Plus everything in between. With so much to capture, this article highlights the cars that made the event so special for us…

What a turn out, don’t you think? Especially when the afternoon turned into rain showers, which was rather disappointing, although this didn’t seem to stop the attendees. Considering the poor forecast and dim day, the quality and quantity of cars was still incredible and bigger than a lot of UK shows. We all love Euro shows so much, it wasn’t surprising to see handfuls of British cars making it over for the weekend, too. So, if you’re thinking about heading over to Europe, Eurosunday in Lommel is definitely worth it. There’s plenty of accommodation locally for a nice weekend away which works out super cheap if you’re in a group, alternatively stay in Antwerp the night before like we did. It’s really not that far from the Eurotunnel/ferry. Anyway, thanks to Kristof and the whole Eurosunday team for having us. We’ll be back for the next chapter!

Early Edition 2016

When April comes around, the talk and excitement building up to Early Edition echoes throughout social media. It’s not surprising, as ‘EE’ is the next biggest event to follow Ultimate Dubs back in March. If you missed that, then EE is the show to debut your car at, and let’s face it, it’s still early on in the show calendar. Held at The Saints stadium in Northampton, the Edition38 crew take over the venue every year to host the pre-show to their established Edition38 ‘Show & Shine’ later on in the year. However, Early Edition has grown considerably over the past couple of years, making it nearly as big. Well, usually that is… This year was a little different, but more on that later! As per usual, we were surrounded by an outstanding selection of cars, traders, food and drink (including the all-important bar), plus glorious weather. We tried to capture as much as we could from the main show itself, in addition to the surrounding car parks with anything that took our fancy.

If you are reading this but didn’t actually attend the show, it may look like it was rather busy from the photographs. In reality, the turnout at this year’s Early Edition was unfortunately about half of what it has been in the past. Who knows what could have actually caused this, but we think it might have had something to do with a lot of the usual suspects heading to Wörthersee in Austria earlier than usual. We also heard that the Show & Shine had changed to a pre-booked method – maybe most people didn’t know about this? With most of the public car parks full of perfectly worthy cars, the show venue itself had plenty of empty spots that could have easily accommodated them. All in all, it was rather disappointing and there was a definite feeling of this in the air from most people we spoke with. But what can you do…? Shit happens as we all know. No doubt the Edition38 team will learn from this and come back bigger than ever next year. We will still be there and you should be too!
