Spring ’17 – 10 Years of The Wheel Specialist Fareham

Date: 13 May 2017

Location: The Wheel Specialist Fareham, Hampshire

Words & Photos by Henry Phull

Back in the Spring of 2015 I was invited to an Open Day at The Wheel Specialist’s (TWS) Fareham branch. Not knowing what to expect, it turned out to be one of the biggest Southern event’s that I’ve attended with a surprisingly high standard of cars in attendance. Two years later, TWS got in touch to say they were organising another Open Day event to celebrate 10 years in business, and they wanted Slam Sanctuary to be involved. Naturally, I agreed, with the intention of targeting the sort of cars that we love – of the slammed variation of course. Well, TWS smashed it once again. The event was a huge success, with all sorts of cars taking over the surrounding industrial estate. With a DJ, burger van, a bar, and great coffee from The Splitscreen Barista, the vibe was perfectly chilled, giving us southerners a much-needed chance to catch up with one another as well as getting a chance to chat to TWS about their services and get an insight into what they do. With so many cool cars popping in and out throughout the day, I captured a few of my favourites, check them out…

The Wheel Specialist Fareham are lucky enough to refurbish wheels on all sorts of rare and quirky vehicles, as well as the typical everyday car – this brought a lot of interesting examples to the Open Day. We may love slammed and stanced cars, but it’s always nice to see things that we rarely see – we’re petrolheads after all. Make sure you check out the Bonus Gallery below for more of these gems. As well as TWS giving away an award for ‘Best Wheels’ of the day (won by Sean Crompton and his Carline CM6’s), we also ran our own Instagram-based competition throughout the day – congratulations to David Cooper for winning with his photograph of Ryan’s Alpina B10 (Click here to check out the photo), he took home some Slam Sanctuary merch and a Meguiar’s Mirror Bright detailing kit. Big thanks to everyone that took part. Nicely done, TWS, here’s to another ten years!

Stance Fever 2016

Date: 22 May 2016

Location: Rockingham, Northamptonshire

Words & Photos by Henry Phull

Back in January I had a message from my friend Faz, the co-organiser behind Stance Fever, mentioning that he was putting on a bigger and better show for 2016. The event originally debuted at the Ace Cafe in London, then moved to Essex in 2015, so this year had to be something even bigger. Bigger is definitely the word… This year Stance Fever moved to the famous Rockingham Speedway in Corby, Northamptonshire. With plenty of excitement in the air, we decided to join forces and agree to attend with our pop-up store for this years show. Plus, it was the first outing for our new Audi A6 Avant hauler, even if it did break down on the way home, but I won’t bore you with the details. Take a look at our highlights from the day – the mix of cars was quite something, with a huge variety of marques catered for.

As usual, a big thank you to anyone that came down to our pop-up store for a chat or to take home some apparel, it’s always a pleasure. With this event getting bigger every year, I can’t wait to see what the team have in store for us next year. Make sure you pencil it in your diaries for 2017. We’ll be back out this weekend for our first European show of the year, Eurosunday in Belgium on Sunday 29th May.

Slam Sanctuary x The Wheel Specialist Bournemouth Open Day 2016

Date: 9 April 2016

Location: The Wheel Specialist Bournemouth, Ferndown, Dorset

Words & Photos by Henry Phull

Down in Bournemouth we don’t have much going on in terms of modified cars… well, ‘quality’ cars I should say. Evidently, they are out there… there’s just been nowhere to congregate, until now. Most weekends we travel all over the country to see cars we adore, but every now and then it’s nice to do something local. Our partners, The Wheel Specialist Bournemouth have always wanted to improve on their open day, so we decided to join forces and organise something special, and different to the area. With a select few hand-picked cars, and the rest of the event open to the public, we invited some of our favourites to come down to TWS’ premises in Ferndown for a full look into their facilities and what services they can offer. Their neighbours very kindly allowed us to take over their car park, making the event as large as possible. Mix this with a food truck, coffee van and music, we were on for a fun day. Plus, we were out with our Pop-Up Store keeping you all looking fresh.

This being Britain, the weather was all over the place.. starting with perfect sunshine in the early morning and leading to rain showers and even hail later on. Everyone seemed to stick with it though, so thank you! We were so impressed with the quality of cars that made the effort to come down and support us and The Wheel Specialist. So much so, that we are looking to make this an annual thing, or maybe even twice a year. A lot of you were saying that more Southern events are needed, so keep an eye on our Facebook page for upcoming events – we are thinking about an End of Season event to finish off 2016.

Eurosunday 2015

Location: Lommel, Belgium

Date: 7 June 2015

Words & Photos by Henry Phull

Eurosunday is one of those European shows I’ve been wanting to go to ever since I started Slam Sanctuary. It’s the show that everyone always raves to me about. I thought I’d be missing it yet again this year – mainly due to low funds having recently spent too much on my project car. Sounds familiar, right? However, flashback to 8pm on the Saturday night before the show, and I received a message from my friend Mark saying “Eurosunday….?”. After a few minutes of laughing at each other, we checked the Euro Tunnel prices, £60 return. Doable! Belgium and back in one day… it seemed like madness, considering we are all the way in Bournemouth – 170 miles from Folkestone. But thinking about it, what else were we going to do on a Sunday? Alarms set for 3.30am, we set off at 4am and thrashed the Mk4 to the Euro Tunnel, with a McDonald’s breakfast and coffee stop tied in of course. To our dismay and after our stupidly early start, we arrived at the Euro Tunnel terminal only to be told there were delays of up to two hours… we weren’t impressed!

Once we finally boarded the train, a brief 40 minutes later we were in Calais, and set off straight away to the show venue. As we were now running late, we gunned it through the short stretch of France and over the border, making our way past Antwerp and then through the delightful countryside into Lommel. We only stopped once for a toilet break by the side of the road! The venue itself was situated in the nearby industrial estate, completely abandoned from the public, making it an ideal venue to host a car show.

We arrived just after Midday, and I was shocked at the sheer amount of cars in the show, it was definitely bigger than anything I’m used to in the UK. Plus to make things even better, it was super hot. After a quick glance at the cars whilst queuing to get in, we both knew we’d made the right decision to do this crazy last minute trip. Anyway, sit back, and let me take you through my show highlights…

That sums up my Eurosunday highlights, hopefully you enjoyed my selection! We stuck around for a short while after the show but then remembered that we had another train to catch, so we hit the road again. Just before we got to Antwerp we bumped into Jamie, Kiran and the rest of the Players crew in their two Mk1’s. As they were also heading for the Euro Tunnel, we decided to join their convoy. Let me tell you, following these two beauties at neck breaking speeds through Belgium and France was quite a sight! Naturally I had to grab a few rolling shots…

I’m so pleased that I finally managed to get over to Belgium for the day. Not only was it my first Eurosunday, but my first ever European car show. You know those mates that constantly go on about how much better Euro shows are? We’ve all got them… Well I’m sorry to say, but I think it’s probably true! This has just made me want to do a lot more Euro shows as soon as possible! Don’t get me wrong, I love the UK shows, but it was certainly nice to mix things up a bit and see some cars I’m not used to seeing. On that note, I’d recommend it to anyone. Hopefully Slam Sanctuary will be back next year!
