Westside Treffen 2016

Westside Treffen is the hidden gem of modified car shows in the UK. It really does surprise me how many people don’t know of its existence when I mention it. From people that have been, including all the regulars, you’ll constantly hear “Come to Westside. It’s THE most chilled out show.” Well, they ain’t lying! The quality of cars on display is usually top notch too, and that’s partly what makes this show awesome. It could also have something to do with the time of year, being the last outdoor event on the calendar, a lot of people are about to tuck their show cars away for winter. Westside is one final stage for your pride and joy to make a spectacle before the new show season (Unless you’re attending Ultimate Stance this weekend, of course – but the crowd there is slightly different). The ideology for Westside is pretty simple really. Book out a cricket club on the outskirts of West London, bring your friends and their cars (of which 80% happen to be concourse condition classic Volkswagens), get the family to help out with some incredible home-cooked food, 80s/90s music and you’re onto a winner. It’s no surprise that the show has grown year on year but still remains a small, relaxed event.

I’m really pleased that Westside has stuck to the same venue. It seems like they could move somewhere bigger every year with ease. Instead, they stick to what they know and what works. Let’s face it, there’s plenty of larger shows you can visit, but this is partly what makes Westside unique. Some worry about getting their car into the show because of the limited space – I say just turn up earlier! I think I said it in my previous article, but 2016 has not been kind to us in regards to rain… Luckily the rain stayed away for this show, but it had been chucking it down the previous night, which meant wet roads on route to the show. This blatantly put a few people off, but it just so happened that people turned up a bit later than usual. The show was heaving. I turned up, caught up with loads of friends, admired some impressive cars, and feasted on some fantastic Jamaican and Indian food. What’s not to love? If you’ve still not been to Westside, you’ve been missing out.

We’ll catch you all very soon with our booth at Ultimate Stance (Telford International Centre) on Sunday 30th October.

Edition38 Show & Shine 2016

It’s that time again… Edition38! This is probably the most anticipated show of the year for Volkswagen and VAG fans. It’s essentially a camping event held over a long weekend, the ideal opportunity to get together with friends and cars. Thanks to plenty of night-time entertainment, people treat it as a party weekend, followed by one of the best Show & Shines in the country at the end of it. Edition has grown so much, that each year I notice a stronger presence of cars that have travelled over from Europe. This year was no exception, as I was blown away by plenty of examples from the Netherlands, Belgium, and France which stood out from everything else – showing us Brits how it should be done. Now, due to the weather being absolutely disgusting on the Friday and Saturday of the event, we skipped them and made our way up on Sunday (the main day for Show & Shine), where the rain stayed away, luckily. Props to everyone that camped all weekend in the wet and mud – that’s dedication! Enjoy our round-up, with some of the UK and Europe’s highest quality dubs.

We sneaked in a few photographs of BMW’s, naturally, as you can often find plenty of non-VAG cars dotted around outside the show field, trying their best to join in. Looking at Volkswagens all day can sometimes become a little boring for us – Edition is one of the few shows left that has still stuck to the ‘VAG only’ rule, but fair play to them, they are still attracting the numbers and going strong, this is was their 16th show! But it still makes you wonder – will they ever give in and let other marques be part of the show? Time will tell. Despite the rain, it looked like most people had a fantastic weekend. Thanks to the Edition38 team for having us, we’ll be back.

RollHard: The Show 2016

Established back in 2010, RollHard is now one of the most recognised groups in the modified car scene… They choose to focus on the sense of community that comes with the lifestyle of a petrolhead, “All makes, all models, one community” as they state, which I absolutely love. It’s not hard to work out why so many car enthusiasts choose to be a part of RH and of course rock the stickers on their cars. Let’s face it, if you’re into cars, you’ve heard of RollHard. They’re everywhere, and even have a huge following over in Europe. Having previously held a few events (RollHard Duxford back in 2013, The Belgian Chapter in 2014 and 2015, and their Charity event also in 2015), a new idea was brought to life this year after discovering an absolute gem of a location in Essex – the Cressing Temple Barns. Imagine a beautiful, scenic venue in the remote countryside, featuring 13th Century Medieval barns, outbuildings, gardens, and paddocks. Not your usual recipe for a car show, but that’s what made this one just that extra bit special. With plenty of nooks and crannies throughout the venue, cars were dotted all over the place, which made it more fun to explore than say, strolling past rows upon rows of cars like at other shows. Usually, I’m not the biggest fan of car events on grass, but the quirkiness of this venue definitely made up for it. So, sit back and check out the highlights below…

RollHard: The Show was certainly one of the more unique car events on the calendar. With plenty of gorgeous cars to look at, gardens to explore, their own cinema, badminton (yep!), on-site tea rooms with ice cream and refreshments, as well as some very tasty food stalls (which makes a nice change!), it made for the perfect day out. For their first event at this venue, I think they did a fantastic job. Here’s to the next one – thanks for having us!

VW Days 2016

This year is all about the European car shows here at Slam Sanctuary. I’d heard numerous good things about VW Days, which is organised every year by ‘Club Golf Ile de France’ and held in a quiet town just outside of Saint Quentin. This is nice for us Brits as the venue is less than a two-hour drive from the Calais terminal, and essentially one stress-free smooth toll road. Being a two day event, we set off on the Saturday morning from the Eurotunnel and decided to stay overnight in a hotel just ten minutes away, although for a majority of the show goers, it’s all about the camping experience. This year though, the weather on Saturday was horrendous – so I’m glad I had a hotel room! The rain put a few people off on day one making it a washout, but come Sunday the sun was out and the show transformed into something epic. I even came home with some sunburn! Much like when we were in Belgium, it was a nice change to see what the Europeans are building.  To adhere to the name VW Days, the event is very VAG-orientated, understandably, with a few exceptions that you’ll find throughout the article. All in all, I was blown away by the variety of builds and the sheer size of the show. Here are the cars that stood out from the crowd…

What a variation, right? The quality of cars was just phenomenal, and it’s hardly surprising that so many people from the UK make the trip over for VW Days. It’s a petrolhead’s dream short break, whether you camp and enjoy the party onsite, or decide to hotel it and experience the local town that becomes completely taken over by modified cars from all over Europe – similar to a mini-Wörthersee in fact. Many thanks to Club Golf IDF for having us, we’ll certainly be back again! Our next European adventure will take us to M.I.V.W. in August. Until then, see you all at the coming UK events.

Players Classic 2016 is a big one for me, it marks the 3 year anniversary of Slam Sanctuary, as this was the show that kickstarted my love of photographing cars. Since then the car scene has come a huge way in terms of quality and builds, just as this show has. Every year the team somehow seem to take over more and more of the Goodwood Motor Circuit grounds to the point where you’ll fail to find a patch of land that isn’t taken up by a show car. Players Classic is the biggest show of the year since Ultimate Dubs back at the start of the season. It’s become so popular that a lot of the show is now largely filled with cars that have made the journey over from Europe. Also, Players is so well-known in the car world that people even fly over from the USA to check out the show and network. It’s become one of the coolest events on the calendar, much down to the venue itself and of course the incredible diversity of cars that are selected and shown throughout Goodwood’s historic paddock. In addition to numerous companies trading in the exclusive ‘Trade Village’ (including us this year!), ‘Classic’ combines a static show with plenty of track action including the pre-booked track day experience and various drifting displays throughout the day – plenty to keep you entertained. That just about sums up our highlights of 2016’s show. Jamie, Carl and the rest of the Players team absolutely smashed it again. They’ve got that ‘chilled’ show vibe perfected, which makes it a pleasure to attend year on year. I must’ve bumped in to 90% of the people I know through cars and the automotive industry which just goes to show that people really do love this event. Catering for all motoring fans (even those who prefer two wheels), there’s something for everyone. If you missed it, then don’t worry… Players is back with their main show later this year at North Weald, Essex on the 18th of September 2016. Shop Visit: Only Charged Dubs

The popularity of air ride has grown considerably over the past couple of years. Not only has it become more accessible, but many people have finally realised how practical it really is. With so many options now available, it doesn’t have to break the bank either. The question is, if you want someone else to do the work for you, then where do you go? Whilst there are plenty of shops dotted around the UK, Only Charged Dubs (OCD) have put out some incredible work as of late and are one of the few that go above and beyond to cater for the customer. The key word that comes to mind with these guys is variation. If you read our show reports, you will have seen plenty of their cars (and customers’ cars) pop up. They were kind enough to invite us up to their headquarters in Doncaster, South Yorkshire where we were welcomed with open arms. Spending a few days with these guys was more like hanging out with mates than visiting your typical garage – the whole experience was a pleasure. Although mostly known for their air installs in the ‘slammed/stance’ scene, the business didn’t actually start off by working with suspension. In fact, OCD is a lot more than just an air ride shop. So let’s take an inside look…

 

 

 

 

Catching up with the owner Matt Payne is always a refreshing experience. Unlike so many people in the industry, he’s completely open about his business and the community in general. One thing that has always stuck with me is that he’s always looking to solve problems, however big or small, so it’s really no surprise that his company has achieved so much. But how did OCD get to where they are today? “It all came about from my Mk2 Golf project. I was working as an apprentice for my local VW dealership when I bought my Golf, which I spent 3 years fully rebuilding from a 1.6 Driver to a G60 8v conversion. Fully overhauled, the only thing I couldn’t do myself was the paint work as I was building it on my parents drive.” Matt reminices. This led him onto the path of G-Lader rebuilds (superchargers found on the G40 & G60 Volkswagens – hence the name ‘Only Charged Dubs’), after other enthusiasts saw the work on his Mk2. He even started developing his own parts for the Golf that weren’t available, as you do. Slowly but surely Matt began to build a customer base on the main UK G60 online forum at the time.

 

 

 

“As well as doing more work at home on friends’ cars, word of mouth spread, leading to more and more jobs” Matt explains. At the time his daily driver was a Skoda Fabia, and to make this more practical he started to look into air suspension. Because he was starting to lug more and more parts around, Matt wanted to lower the car in a way that would accept the excess weight. “I managed to get a trade account for air suspension which led on to installing air to a friend’s car shortly before the Elsecar Megameet 2013, which made OCD more well known in the ‘stance’ scene.” he says. Anyone starting up on their own cannot wait until they’re in a position to quit their full time job and concentrate on their true ambition, I can tell you this myself from starting Slam Sanctuary. Well, for Matt this opportunity came soon after that Megameet. He said goodbye to his job at Volkswagen and set up shop in a unit next door to Darkside Developments in Barnsley. With help from their team, together they pushed the OCD brand forward by modernising the website, adding more products and providing the much needed extra space for installations and “crazier work!” Matt laughs.

 

 

 

 

After 12 months in his first ever unit, neighbours Darkside Developments decided to re-locate to a new premises, which meant that Matt could also move the business back to Doncaster, his home. Not only was the new unit on his doorstep, but it was also closer to Carl Atkins, the man behind OCD’s boot installs and custom fabrication, overall making it a worthwhile move. “OCD had reached a point where it could stand on it’s own two feet much better and was needing much more operating space, both for stock and workshop.” Matt reveals. They’ve just finished it off to a state where they are happy with it, with a brand new showroom and waiting room. Having spent a good few days there myself, I can tell you it’s a great place to be and hang out.

 

 

 

With the facilities covered, OCD can offer anything from VAG servicing to full-blown engine swaps and classic car restoration. “Of course, G-Lader services, parts and expertise is something we will always offer. It’s where my VW love came from and I still believe there’s nothing quite like a well tuned 8v G60 engine in a classic dub!” Matt points out. One thing I do love about OCD, is that they give their customers a broad range of options to fit most budgets. Unlike a lot of salespeople, Matt and the team won’t just try and sell you the most expensive product. This has been an aim of theirs from the beginning. “Everyone loves an R8 on air with expensive wheels, but in reality only a lucky 1% can own that. So we aim to offer the same parts, service and options to every customer.” Matt explains. The key to Only Charged Dubs? Offering a wide range of products of course. If you’re looking to bag your car, a look on their website shows that there’s several options. From the popular Air Lift Performance, HP Drivetech, AccuAir and VIAIR options, to brands such as Airdynamiks, Air Zenith and several BagRiders products. Plus, they even offer their own “Bags by OCD” branded items – which we’ll look at shortly. If there’s no kit readily available for your car, Matt and the team will come up with a solution.

 

 

 

OCD keep a large variety of stock on their shelves, from air tanks of all sizes, fittings, compressors, and tons of spares which makes them one of the few companies that can offer their people specialist items next day to your door if needed. This is always handy if any of your components fail and you get stuck. With shipments coming in every week from the USA, OCD are now the sole UK distributors for BagRiders (a large air ride distributor in the USA), meaning that you can order most hard-to-get items from OCD without paying those dreaded import charges if you were to order direct from the States. With their online sales ever increasing, Matt says that 2016/17 will show an even bigger expansion with more and more products being added across their range.

 

 

 

Only Charged Dubs recently introduced their ‘Bags by OCD’ range of air bags. The idea initially came up whilst they were working on their demo Mercedes-Benz W201. Of course, being a classic car everything on the Merc had to be custom made… “We found that there is an ‘ok’ range of bags to work with instead of independent springs. But bags that work over dampers are hugely limited, and the ones available are ok on some platforms but offer poor drop or lift on others depending on how they are set up.” Matt explains, “Plus there’s no options of sleeves over dampers too, meaning some cars with tight suspension space either have to lose out with no air option or undergo expensive custom work to the rest of the suspension.” To combat this, they launched ‘Bags by OCD’, a product that is moderately priced alongside most air suspension kits, which work and perform to the same level, but allowing a bigger range of custom bags. Designed to work with BC Racing’s Extreme Low coilovers, they allow customers to mount the bag on to the threaded body, sealing it to the damper giving the maximum drop and lift that the damper gives. Obviously this still allows for BC’s threaded body adjustment, dampening adjustment all round plus camber front top mounts of most applications. Most kits retail at around £1300-£1500 depending on the rear bag mounting. So far they’ve used these kits on a BMW Z4, VW Mk6 GTI and will soon be testing on a Honda S2000 and Lexus IS220. Plus, having universal bags readily available means they can be used on cars with absolutely no air options available, such as our own Slam Sanctuary demo Audi A6 FWD which we’ll be showing you soon!

 

 

 

Being the main UK distributor of Airdynamiks, this was the first time I had the chance to check out their products in person. I have to say that the build quality and attention to detail is second-to-none. After noticing them testing various car kits around 18 months ago, they got in touch and began working on a kit for their Audi C5 A6 Allroad demo car, a customers Audi A1 (and Polo platform) and their Audi Mk2 TT Quattro demo car. Based in Canada, the turnaround time on these products means a slightly longer wait, but it is definitely worth it. Sister company to Scale Suspension, who primarily build top end racing suspension for track, time attack and drifting, Airdynamiks use the same dampers which they convert into air suspension. “Their twist is using a range of air bag sizes to suit certain models of car. Giving a smaller air bag if space is tight but also giving a much better spring rating. A smaller bag allows for a high bag pressure at ride height, whilst using less air tank volume. So less compressor time!” Matt says. These kits come with threaded body dampers, dampening adjustment and optional camber top plates for most applications. “As well as anodized components, stainless hardware and powdercoated mountings these kits don’t just work well, they look the part too as well as lasting for years!”. I was so impressed with the quality of these products that we decided to make them available through the Slam Sanctuary online store, too.

I asked Matt the all-important question, what he thinks OCD are best known for?… “I’d like to think our friendliness and social side” he replied, and I completely agree. In fact, I often come across his comments throughout social media which are always trying to assist people, not just selling a product 24/7. That’s absolute gold right there and a rare thing. “OCD has always been something more than just a specialist shop. Friends and customers are always welcome to our shop to just chill out. We feel this is something that has quickly dropped from the scene and made things more of a competition than an enthusiasm.” he continued. The idea of bringing back this enthusiasm for the cars and seeing customers projects go from standard to magazine featured is what it’s all about for Only Charged Dubs. Plus, that VAG group technician training really gives them the upper hand when it comes to find their way around most Volkswagens, Audis, Seats and Skodas. That background has built Matt’s vision of keeping to a certain quality of work which he strives to keep to a factory level. “I’d always like to think should our work be seen at another garage their technicians wouldn’t notice what we’d installed against the factory components of the car.” he adds.

With four main members of staff; Matt the owner and technician, Carl who carries out the boot install work, Joe who runs front of house – answering customers calls, emails and handling orders including packing day in, day out, as well as Danny who runs the graphic design side of things behind the scenes, Only Charged Dubs are some of the friendliest and approachable bunch of guys in the industry. Not forgetting, professional, full of knowledge and brilliant at what they do – so there’s no stopping them! With plans to completely overhaul their online presence this year by adding an even bigger range of air suspension kits, expanding on their coilover range in addition to a much-needed FAQ section and an overall easier shopping experience, it’s worth keeping your eyes peeled to their social media and website. Ultimate Stance 2014 – Part 3

Better late than never! We’re back with the final part of our Ultimate Stance coverage. In the first two parts we saw some incredible cars and this section gets even better, focusing on the final two halls of the show. First up, Wheel Whores were out in full force with an exclusive ‘Wheel Whores Show’, making its debut at Ultimate Stance. We were super excited for the swap meet they set up which allowed anyone to buy, sell or trade rare wheels right there at the show. Considering it was timed at the end of show season, this was the perfect opportunity for enthusiasts to buy and browse possible rims for winter projects. Plus they had the gorgeous Wheel Whores promo girls skating around the hall taking ‘Instagram selfies’ with show-goers. Adding live wheel building and refurbishing, tyre fitting tips and live pin striping, it was certainly the place to be.

 

 

 

Continuing along the infamous Wheel Whores pink carpet, we were taken in by Matt Glassup’s incredible Porsche 964 on a beautiful set of BBS RS wheels. This is an absolute dream 911.

 

 

 

 

Up at the front and representing the Wheel Whores show was Jayne Kay’s Pink Lady Racing fuel altered Model T drag car, along with Richie of Milestone71’s stunning Porsche 964.

 

 

We loved this cool addition to the show, the ‘Tikes and Trikes’ display and competition, some really outstanding kids toys that have been modified like nothing you’ve ever seen before!

 

 

Over on the Rothink stand was Andy Rudd’s insane T25 Transporter Pick Up, which completely blew us away – considering this is static with no air ride or hydraulics. Impressive!

 

 

 

Having snapped this a while back at Retro Rides Gathering, it was nice to see Shaun Mint’s Mk1 Nova saloon in attendance. It’s such a clean car after a long restoration and respray, and looks perfect on the G60 banded steels. No doubt, one of our favourite Vauxhalls of all time.

 

 

Huxley Motorsport were showing off their intense RA28 Celica drift car running an SR20 with around 300bhp and hoping for over 400 next season, definitely something to watch out for.

 

 

Alongside was Bryn Musselwhite’s Volvo 245 which recently had a new set of Volk Racing / Rays TE37 wheels, resulting in a hard as nails look.

 

 

 

 

Dan Taylor’s E46 M3 looked the business on Broadway Static custom coilovers and OZ Breyton splits.

 

 

 

Our friends from LikeHell were breaking necks as per usual with Jordan O’Sullivan’s Mini on Carline CM6 splits…

 

 

…And Josh Mussell’s static Nissan 350z on Work Meisters.

 

 

The last time we got up and close to this beauty was actually at Edition38 2013. Finally, we got to see it fully exposed thanks to Wheel Whores. Alex Wright’s Mk1 Golf has to be one of the countries best examples. Sitting on 8.5×15 BBS E30 splits, this Helios blue GTI is packing a 16v G60 motor and is not one to be missed.

 

 

 

 

Unsurprisingly, one of the most popular Mk2 Golf’s of the year is Simon Delahaye’s immaculate example on custom Pirelli P-Slot splits. Overall a car built to perfection.

 

 

Mixing things up quite a bit was Bobby from Milkandtwo with his DKW Schnellaster/F89, a super rare sight.

 

 

We adored Jack Hale’s Mercedes 280CE drag car running a small block Chevy V8. There’s something about building a drag car out of a luxury barge, so wrong, yet SO right. Clearly an incredible amount of work has taken place for this build and the result is outstanding.

The variation of vehicles has already been pretty awesome, and it continued with Ade Brannan’s Chrysler Horizon. A perfect example of bringing a retro car back to life with lows and wheels. It’s clean, too!

 

 

The same goes for Shaun Morris’ Mk1 Astra on polished Gotti splits, a credit to him in every way.

 

 

One vehicle that debuted at the start of show season was Jamie McToldridge’s Players’ Datsun pick up built by Balls’d. It’s crazy to think it’s done a whole season already, and we’re excited to see what’s in store for it next year.

 

 

 

The Kleen Freaks lineup is always on point and this show was no different, starting with Kats Gile’s bagged Mk5 on a gorgeous set of 3-piece Rotiform LHRs.

 

 

Not forgetting Rob and Harry’s Candy red Lupo GTI on CCW D11L 3-piece wheels along with Steve’s bagged Mk6 Golf.

 

 

With their amazing 0% Finance deals, Car Audio & Security always have a busy trade stand, in fact it was hard to take a shot due to the sheer amount of constant people gathering around the booth. Make sure you hit them up for your winter project needs.

 

 

BBS LM’s are not a wheel we often see anymore, but Neil Hargraves’ bagged Audi TT pulled them off really well with the gold centres and red caps to match the body colour.

 

 

CCW’s are always a stunning combination on Civics, especially like the polished examples shown below on Aaron Gemmell’s awesome EK.

 

 

 

Moving over to the Players & Dubkorps stand, we checked out Jay’s other car, a stunning Mk1 Golf which we’ve seen plenty of back from Players at North Weald a few months ago. Here it was sitting on a new set of wheels, some spectacular BBS E50 which really bring the car together.

 

 

We can’t forget the Players S14 either, built to be driven hard, on Air Lift Performance bags and Rotiform TMB’s.

 

 

Across the way, a lot of people including ourselves were talking about this R32 Skyline. If you think back to the old school Gran Turismo days, this is what you’ll remember. The car was absolutely immaculate, and looked like it had just driven out the showroom, all thanks to a squeaky clean colour change/respray. A show favourite, for sure.

 

 

 

Moving through the hallways we took a look at the PBMW and PVW magazine stands with some nice cars on display as usual.

 

 

 

…And into the final show hall, the more intimate carpeted room of them all, kicking off with Seb de Latour’s (editor of PBMW) E39 540i recently bagged by the guys at Studio Incar which sits very nicely especially at the rear, holy tuck!

 

 

 

 

Continuing with the theme of diversity.. what a pleasant surprise it was to see Retro Rides in attendance with their own stand. Retro Rides Gathering is one of our all time favourite shows so we loved that they had their own selection of cars at Ultimate Stance. Naturally, everything on display was something else! First up, Dean Meeson’s show-stopping Lotus Esprit, packing a 24v Alfa Romeo V6 engine, air ride and Compomotive CXN wheels. A sensational combination. What a car!

 

 

 

Another retro car with another engine swap… Dave Colledge’s Ford 2.3 Duratec powered Lada on banded steels, beautifully executed.

 

 

Aaron Harrison’s Volvo C30 was looking flawless on hydraulic suspension and finished off nicely with a set of RH ZW1 splits.

 

 

Tornado Red will always be one of the best colours on a Mk2, this example was simply stunning. A solid representation of how a classic Golf should look. Sitting low using Air Lift V2 suspension and 16″ BBS RS splits, this is one clean car. We loved the rear louvre too.

 

 

Going back even further in time was this mint Mk1 on Maserati/Campagnolo wheels, air ride and an AFH in the bay. Mk1 perfection?

 

 

On the other side of the hall Studio Incar had set up shop with a huge display, nice job Shakey! On show were some of the best car’s they’ve built over the past year.

 

 

Of course, Nick Sahota’s bagged E30 M3 with the S54 engine swap that debuted at the start of the season in the very same room at Ultimate Dubs. Nick and Studio Incar have done a tremendous job building a car with the intention of it going viral, and it certainly has. It’s probably one of the most talked about cars of 2014. Even the purists have grown to love it.

 

 

Their demo car, the Liberty Walk E92 M3 was recently given a fresh new style with a toned down wrap and black painted Rotiform TMB’s. It will be sad to see this car go soon.

 

 

Sam Beach’s murdered out E24 635CSI was looking menacing on a full Air Lift V2 custom suspension and Kerscher RX splits. Certainly an inspiration for our own 635 project!

 

 

Alongside was Joshua Hay’s E92, bagged with Air Lift bags/struts and controlled with AccuAir eLevel management. This thing sits SO well, check out the rear tuckage.

 

 

As if one wasn’t enough, let’s finish up back on the Retro Rides stand with another Lotus on air, Charlie Croker’s 1977 S1 Elite. Having read his build thread over at Retro Rides, it’s evident that Charlie has undertaken a massive project. Seeing what the car looked like when he picked it up and how gleaming it looks now is incredible.

 

 

 

And there we have it, our final show write up until next year. It has to be said, the organisers did extremely well with the first ever ‘Ultimate Stance’. We previously heard lots of people worrying about what the turnout would be like, given it being so late in the year with the Winter weather approaching and so on… Well, it was one of the best show’s we’ve attended, and it all comes down to the variation of cars, especially with these last two halls. Sure, we love Ultimate Dubs, but Ultimate Stance displayed cars from all walks of life in the car world, not just the usual specific show cars we have all become accustomed to (Of course, they still play a massive role in what we do). This time around, show goers were presented with vehicles which some would found difficult to work out what they even were. We feel a lot of eyes have been well and truly opened to what is possible if you look outside the box, this is a great thing and the right direction for the scene. Here’s to seeing more diversity next year… Thanks to the organisers for having us and see you all at Ultimate Dubs in 2015 for the season opener.

 

 

A Final Farewell – Cj Smith’s 1991 Volkswagen Mk2 Golf GTI

Most of my closest friends are notorious for their love of Mk1 Volkswagens, and because of this I am forever surrounded by Golfs, Jettas and Caddys of that generation. I suppose they will always be my favourite sort of Volkswagen, probably because they’ve been forced upon me! Who knows… Anyway, taking a liking to anything else usually doesn’t go down well with the die-hard Mk1 enthusiasts. It would seem Mk2s, Mk3s, Mk4s and so on, just don’t cut it. I however am not one to judge so quickly. See, I’ve always had a soft spot for Mk2 Golfs. A few months back I was down in Taunton in Somerset shooting Louis Nobbs’ Mk2 Jetta, word spread that I was in town and a few other locals were interested in shooting with me, including Cj Smith, who I knew owned an absolutely stunning Mk2 Golf GTI on air, which I had noticed at last year’s Edition38 show. I jumped at the opportunity to meet up and take some photographs.

 

 

Built in 1991, Cj’s GTI is one of the later Mk2s produced, leaving the factory with a facelift which included the ‘big bumper’ upgrade, turning the GTI into a truly sporty looking hatchback. Cj had never really been the biggest fan of the bigger bumper cars, but this time thought it was rare, especially finished in Capri green which would help the car stand out from the crowd. It looked good in all the classified pictures and had a great history, so as soon as he went to look at the car in person, he knew it was the one. After that, everything fell into place.

 

 

The car was a completely original example, untouched and unmolested. Thankfully it wasn’t your typical GTI that had been ragged to death in the past by a boy racer owner. The standard GTI spec’d 1.8 8v lump was in adequate condition and running well, so Cj decided to leave it as is, apart from the addition of a cheeky K&N filter and full stainless exhaust for some much required extra noise.

 

 

Cj’s main focus was to get the car sitting as he wanted it… on the floor. There were obviously two options, coilovers or bags. Having owned a few small bumper Mk2s in the past that were static and ridiculously low, he’d been through it all already… including getting pulled by the cops into a VOSA checkpoint and smashing a cats eye on the way in, which didn’t seem to go down so well with them! For this project Cj did his research and only found a handful of bagged examples at the time, so thought it would be amazing to build one himself. Unfortunately this meant he had to give up his Mk1 Jetta which he owned and cherished at the time, but ultimately for a very good reason.

 

 

One body modification that has totally transformed the appearance of the Mk2 is the addition of G60 arches, which are much wider than the standard GTI ones, specifically sourced by Cj to give the car a far meaner look, and allowing them to sit flush with the lips. Onto those beautiful wheels, which took a while for Cj to decide on, spending ages running in circles in his head to find the right wheels for the car. He knew he didn’t want the common BBS RS or RM, as he’d run them both on previous cars. After trying a couple of Monoblock wheels, the car just didn’t look right. Finally, he bit the bullet and purchased another friend’s set of BBS E76 15×9 splits and added 185/45 tyres all round, resulting in outstanding fitment. Together with gold centres and genuine BBS lip stickers, Cj has done a fine job pairing these wheels with the rest of the car. The gold just works so strongly with the Capri green paintwork.

 

 

Air suspension has become extremely popular, this year especially, and it’s no surprise… it can completely transform a car, like it has done with the Mk2. You’ve got two options, pay a company to install an air ride kit for you, or attempt the build yourself. When you think about it, it’s really not as difficult as some people think. Getting it sitting correctly, and low enough, can sometimes be more challenging though. Due to previous experience with air, Cj decided to take on the project himself, and the result is obviously very impressive for a home build. Luckily a friend at the time was breaking his bagged Seat Ibiza Cupra, and although the air kit from the Ibiza wasn’t ideal for the Mk2, it still meant Cj was able to purchase air ride components for a fair price.

 

 

 

Cj eventually opted for top of the range management for his air build, utilising Air Lift Performance‘s AutoPilot V2, one of the most advanced controls on the market and a popular choice for its ease of use. In addition, he’s used an AccuAir tank along with two VIAIR 380c compressors for a rapid ‘airing-out’ process. Taking a look into the boot and you’ll notice a beautifully simple set up featuring fully carpeted turrets and a matching retrim on the back of the rear bench. Another nice touch are the awesome polished copper hardliners turning this into a classy affair. Hidden away underneath is a compartment for storage, and a false floor within the spare wheel well hiding the AutoPilot V2 manifold and ICE components such as the amplifier.

 

 

Cj believes you don’t need to go ‘all out’ on a boot build. He’s all about keeping things clean and simple. Having built numerous setups on his and friends previous cars, including audio installations, he’s now offering his services to anyone interested. So if you are based in the South West and are looking for a simple yet clean build, get in touch with him. After seeing his Mk2 and a few other cars rocking his work, he is clearly the man for the job.

 

 

A glimpse into the cabin, and it looks like a standard ultraviolet GTI interior, apart from a subtle US heater display panel and speaker faded switch in addition to a Kenwood 90s flip down headunit hooked up to JL Audio speakers all round. The AutoPilot V2 controller is nicely tucked into the ashtray, so it can be hidden away to keep the OEM look. You’ll also notice a 280mm Momo Team steering wheel and boss, for a more sporty and satisfying driving experience.

 

 

 

We took the shoot to a quiet industrial estate so we could completely take over the road, a chance to fully take in the Mk2’s presence. It truly is a thing of absolute beauty.

 

 

With a lot of car enthusiasts, boredom can strike at any moment… with constant classifieds and eBay temptations lurking, you’ll eventually want something new. It happens to us all. Cj built the Mk2 to perfection, doing literally everything he wanted to the car, to the highest standard. Hell, everything that was OEM on the car has been kept genuine Volkswagen, including the the wiring loom tape! When you’ve gone into such fine detail, going further becomes a struggle. Two years of ownership took its toll and unfortunately the Mk2 has now been put back to standard and is up for sale. Cj’s just picked up a new project of the air-cooled variety, a 1972 Beetle in ivory white, which he is also planning to put on air! I’m looking forward to seeing him work his magic on the new addition. Knowing Cj, it’s going to be good.
