VW Days 2017

After attending Club Golf IDF’s VW Days last year for the first time, I knew it wasn’t an event I wanted to miss again, so I made sure to booked my travel and accommodation for the 2017 show well in advance. Held over two days, this show makes the perfect long weekend, or mini holiday if you’re travelling from another country. Whether you decide to camp at the show venue and take advantage of the onsite night-time entertainment, or stay in the nearby hotels and takeover the local town (which is what we did), VW Days is more about spending time with friends – it just so happens to be an incredible car show, too. With high quality cars attending from all over Europe, there was plenty to see – what they’ve achieved is, no doubt, France’s answer to a premier car show. Although I’d say the event is 90% VAG, Ilce and the organisers are partial to the odd BMW, Mercedes-Benz and non-VAG car being allowed in, which makes for a nice change, because although the Europeans build some of the best Volkswagens and Audis that I’ve ever seen, it’s still good to offer some variety – they seemed to get this just right. VW Days is truly an amazing weekend away. Situated in Northern France, it’s a really easy drive along one toll road from the Euro Tunnel and ferry terminals (approx. 1hr45min). Plus it’s close to neighbouring countries too – which explains the large turnout of foreign cars mostly from Belgium and Germany. Whether you’re into camping, or prefer the luxuries of a hotel, I can’t recommend VW Days enough – it’s probably the next best thing to the Wörthersee experience and a lot more affordable. With so many cars to admire, make sure you check out the Bonus Gallery below to see even more. Big thanks to Ilce and the team for welcoming us – we’ll be back next year. Don’t think about it, do it!

Stance Fever 2017

After the success of last year’s show, we decided to head back up to Rockingham Motor Speedway for 2017’s offering of Stance Fever. Starting back in 2014 as a small event at the Ace Cafe in London, Stance Fever is the brainchild of Faz Ahmed (Specialist Tyres) and Nick Rance (Beds-Modified) who wanted to bring two rather different car cultures and styles together. It’s no surprise, then, that a wide variation of cars and taste is commonplace at their show. Both well connected within the car community, Nick and Faz packed-out the Ace Cafe for their first event… Year two called for a bigger venue, and a move to Norton Heath Centre in Essex. With the high quality of cars, more and more people had their eyes on Stance Fever, thanks to their ‘quality over quantity’ vibe, visible from the get-go. In 2016, it was time to open up the show to a wider audience with the introduction of Rockingham Motor Speedway, which provided much more space for cars. Take a look at our highlights from last weekend…

Clearly, the quality of cars in attendance at Stance Fever gets higher and higher each year, and, although not a huge event, this year did see over 600 people through the gates. With two ‘Top 100’ pre-selected areas of show cars along with plenty of club-stands and even space for people to simply turn up and show their car on the day, the event caters for everyone. Plus, with live drifting taking place simultaneously, as well as the usual Rockingham track action, there’s plenty to see if you do happen to get bored of looking at cars. Naturally, Faz and Nick have decided to continue at Rockingham for 2018, with even more updates planned. So, keep an eye on the Stance Fever social media pages for an announcement of the date – you’re going to want to add it to your diary!

Elsecar at the Races 2017

Elsecar at the Races is a new one for us at Slam Sanctuary, so let’s begin with a little history… What started out as a car meet known as ‘Elsecar Mega Meet’ / ‘Club GTI Mega Meet’ a whole 19 years ago, this historical gathering of cars has grown into something much, much bigger. With previous meets taking place at the Elsecar Heritage Centre in Elsecar, Barnsley, they were seeing over 200 show cars and 200 club cars in attendance! With popularity continually growing, 2016 saw the organisers move the event to Doncaster Racecourse, which has the the capacity for 700+ vehicles. This went hand-in-hand with re-naming the show to ‘Elsecar at the Races’. Our friends at Only Charged Dubs (and Elsecar show sponsors) had been raving about last year’s show, which meant we had to come up this year to see what all the fuss was about. We were met with one of most chilled-out events we’d ever been to. The whole vibe was perfect and everyone was extremely welcoming and friendly to each other. Along with an excellent mix of stanced, classic, air-cooled, and a whole host of club stands on display, Elsecar is a show that any petrolhead can enjoy – catering for all tastes. So, was it worth the 8-hour round trip? Based down on the South Coast, we don’t often get up to Yorkshire, but 2017 is all about expanding our horizons and we’re so glad to have made the journey. It was totally refreshing to visit to a car show with so many different sorts of vehicles to lust over, and, although it’s predominantly a VAG show, there were still plenty of other marques being shown off – with no hatred (often the case at similar events). Of course, The glorious weather made the day even better, and it was nice to have the indoor part of the show to catch some much needed shade from the sun. No doubt, Elsecar at the Races will be added to our annual diary for the foreseeable future. Thanks to the guys at Only Charged Dubs for letting us tag along for the weekend, too.

Westside Treffen 2016

Westside Treffen is the hidden gem of modified car shows in the UK. It really does surprise me how many people don’t know of its existence when I mention it. From people that have been, including all the regulars, you’ll constantly hear “Come to Westside. It’s THE most chilled out show.” Well, they ain’t lying! The quality of cars on display is usually top notch too, and that’s partly what makes this show awesome. It could also have something to do with the time of year, being the last outdoor event on the calendar, a lot of people are about to tuck their show cars away for winter. Westside is one final stage for your pride and joy to make a spectacle before the new show season (Unless you’re attending Ultimate Stance this weekend, of course – but the crowd there is slightly different). The ideology for Westside is pretty simple really. Book out a cricket club on the outskirts of West London, bring your friends and their cars (of which 80% happen to be concourse condition classic Volkswagens), get the family to help out with some incredible home-cooked food, 80s/90s music and you’re onto a winner. It’s no surprise that the show has grown year on year but still remains a small, relaxed event.

I’m really pleased that Westside has stuck to the same venue. It seems like they could move somewhere bigger every year with ease. Instead, they stick to what they know and what works. Let’s face it, there’s plenty of larger shows you can visit, but this is partly what makes Westside unique. Some worry about getting their car into the show because of the limited space – I say just turn up earlier! I think I said it in my previous article, but 2016 has not been kind to us in regards to rain… Luckily the rain stayed away for this show, but it had been chucking it down the previous night, which meant wet roads on route to the show. This blatantly put a few people off, but it just so happened that people turned up a bit later than usual. The show was heaving. I turned up, caught up with loads of friends, admired some impressive cars, and feasted on some fantastic Jamaican and Indian food. What’s not to love? If you’ve still not been to Westside, you’ve been missing out.

Founded by Jamie McToldridge and Carl Taylor, their vision came into fruition by hosting a new type of show that catered for all petrolheads within the clustered automotive world, but most importantly, oozing anything cool. Naturally, Players is known to have a strong presence of cars sporting Air Lift suspension and Rotiform wheels, but that’s to be expected when they are the main sponsors of the event. BUT, it’s balanced out with plenty of diversity. For example, walking into the main show, the first thing that would’ve met your eyes was a jacked up Chevy Impala lowrider. Followed by the UK’s first RWB Porsche. Then a classic Mercedes-Benz to a brand new BMW M4 on air. From a selection of Mk1 Golfs, to a Bagged Austin Healey! And people say that there’s no variation left these days? Well, I’m sorry, but that’s just plain B.S. – Jamie and Carl are two guys with quite the opposite taste in cars – put them together and you’ve got a team of incredible curators, showing us what is cool, and what’s going to ‘wow’ you as soon as you step foot into their show. Players 10.0 proved that they’ve still got it, ten years later.

So, Players remains on top with variation and unbeatable quality of cars – but, and it’s a big but, is it enough in this fast-moving automotive community? With so many new shows on the horizon, it’s clearly becoming more and more of a chore to keep up with the youngsters and new breed of car enthusiasts. With content from shows popping up on Instagram before you even have a chance to look around in person, there’s an unfortunate sense of impatience in the car scene these days. I get the feeling that the North Weald show is gradually becoming second to its younger sister, Players Classic, which is the event that seems to get bigger and better each year – plus there’s the history and motorsport heritage that comes with the location of Goodwood Motor Circuit. North Weald will always remain a special place to ourselves and others that have been part of the scene for years – but could it be time for a change of format? We’ll be supporting it nonetheless.

Edition38 Show & Shine 2016

It’s that time again… Edition38! This is probably the most anticipated show of the year for Volkswagen and VAG fans. It’s essentially a camping event held over a long weekend, the ideal opportunity to get together with friends and cars. Thanks to plenty of night-time entertainment, people treat it as a party weekend, followed by one of the best Show & Shines in the country at the end of it. Edition has grown so much, that each year I notice a stronger presence of cars that have travelled over from Europe. This year was no exception, as I was blown away by plenty of examples from the Netherlands, Belgium, and France which stood out from everything else – showing us Brits how it should be done. Now, due to the weather being absolutely disgusting on the Friday and Saturday of the event, we skipped them and made our way up on Sunday (the main day for Show & Shine), where the rain stayed away, luckily. Props to everyone that camped all weekend in the wet and mud – that’s dedication! Enjoy our round-up, with some of the UK and Europe’s highest quality dubs.

We sneaked in a few photographs of BMW’s, naturally, as you can often find plenty of non-VAG cars dotted around outside the show field, trying their best to join in. Looking at Volkswagens all day can sometimes become a little boring for us – Edition is one of the few shows left that has still stuck to the ‘VAG only’ rule, but fair play to them, they are still attracting the numbers and going strong, this is was their 16th show! But it still makes you wonder – will they ever give in and let other marques be part of the show? Time will tell. Despite the rain, it looked like most people had a fantastic weekend. Thanks to the Edition38 team for having us, we’ll be back.

Auto Grüppe’s Summer Run 2016

Auto Grüppe organised an event back in 2014… the congregation of some incredible cars at Beaconsfield services on the M40, followed by a leisurely drive to the rendezvous point at Southsea seafront in Hampshire, for a chilled evening with friends and cars. To this day, it remains one of the coolest gatherings that I’ve attended in the UK. I’ve been patiently waiting for the guys to plan the next one – This year they finally got their act together and set a date for the second event. The idea was exactly the same as before (why change something that worked so well, right?), another cruise from Beaconsfield down to Southsea. I decided to skip the convoy and meet up with everyone in Southsea along with a few other Southerners, seeing as we live around the area, anyway. When I arrived, there were already plenty of modified cars trying to take over the Avenue where the meet was being held – unfortunately it was a bank holiday Monday after a big music festival held at the same location, so there were a few vans and tractors moving about and clearing up the rubbish from the weekend, but we made the most of it and it didn’t seem to spoil the vibe. To top it off, the weather was glorious.

This was the sort of evening that sticks with you.. even more so than the typical car show, and don’t worry, not your average car park meet. It was definitely refreshing to see a turnout of quality vehicles take over a picturesque Avenue – particularly when you get such a beautiful sunset in the background. I think the photos speak for themselves, so props to Auto Grüppe for hosting yet another successful ‘Summer Run’. So this has got me thinking, we already have ‘Homegrown’ in West London and ‘Dub Club’ in the Midlands… perhaps we need something like this more frequently down on the south coast. RollHard: The Show 2016

Established back in 2010, RollHard is now one of the most recognised groups in the modified car scene… They choose to focus on the sense of community that comes with the lifestyle of a petrolhead, “All makes, all models, one community” as they state, which I absolutely love. It’s not hard to work out why so many car enthusiasts choose to be a part of RH and of course rock the stickers on their cars. Let’s face it, if you’re into cars, you’ve heard of RollHard. They’re everywhere, and even have a huge following over in Europe. Having previously held a few events (RollHard Duxford back in 2013, The Belgian Chapter in 2014 and 2015, and their Charity event also in 2015), a new idea was brought to life this year after discovering an absolute gem of a location in Essex – the Cressing Temple Barns. Imagine a beautiful, scenic venue in the remote countryside, featuring 13th Century Medieval barns, outbuildings, gardens, and paddocks. Not your usual recipe for a car show, but that’s what made this one just that extra bit special. With plenty of nooks and crannies throughout the venue, cars were dotted all over the place, which made it more fun to explore than say, strolling past rows upon rows of cars like at other shows. Usually, I’m not the biggest fan of car events on grass, but the quirkiness of this venue definitely made up for it. So, sit back and check out the highlights below…

RollHard: The Show was certainly one of the more unique car events on the calendar. With plenty of gorgeous cars to look at, gardens to explore, their own cinema, badminton (yep!), on-site tea rooms with ice cream and refreshments, as well as some very tasty food stalls (which makes a nice change!), it made for the perfect day out. For their first event at this venue, I think they did a fantastic job. Here’s to the next one – thanks for having us!

FittedUK 2016 – Part 1

If you were to step inside FittedUK’s new venue for 2016, you wouldn’t believe that they’re only into their third year of putting on events. Now, I thought their show was big last year, but this time they’ve taken it to the next level and beyond by renting out EventCity in Manchester. That’s 28,000 square metres of indoor space, making it the UK’s biggest indoor car show… Quite a step up from Wetherby Racecourse, leaving a hell of a lot of space to fill with cars, traders and public ticket-holders of course. The FittedUK team have been promoting this year’s event throughout social media and constantly teasing us with photographs and videos showing off the size of the venue – so turning up on the day before the show to set up the Slam Sanctuary trade stand was an incredible chance to see it all come together and watch Alex and the team’s vision come into fruition. To be honest, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect.. could they deliver on everyone’s high expectations? Well, sure enough Sunday morning arrived, the doors opened to the public, and rest-assured, people started flowing in. It was BUSY – all day long. Normally at shows, people tend to get bored towards the end of the day, but with an event this big – there was always something new to see. So much in fact, that we’ve had to split our photo coverage into two articles! So sit back and enjoy Part 1 below…

Dorset Volksfest 2016

We’ve been supporting Dorset Volksfest (DVF) since their first show back in 2013. Being on our doorstep, DVF brings our local Volkswagen community together over a long weekend (Friday-Sunday). It’s the perfect excuse to have a short break with family and friends and admire some awesome VW’s at the same time. The show has continued to grow, with 2016 no doubt being their biggest and best event yet. It’s even started to attract people from all over the country which is truly amazing to see – it means Richie and the DVF crew are doing something right! If you’re looking for a chilled weekend away with plenty of food & drink, trade stalls and entertainment, then this is the show for you. This year we turned up on the Sunday and set up our pop-up store – thanks to everyone that stopped by and picked up some gear! Of course, whilst juggling the store, we managed to take a look around the Show & Shine area as well as the many cool cars dotted around the show field. Here’s our highlights…

It always seems to rain on the Sunday of Dorset Volksfest… Unfortunately this year was no different and we were drenched on arrival for most of the morning. Luckily though, the afternoon cleared up and it turned into one of the warmest days of Summer yet. With a fantastic range of air-cooled Volkswagens as well as a few water-cooled gems on display, the turnout was awesome offering something for every sort of Volkswagen fan. We’d like to say a big thank you to the DVF crew for allowing us to turn up late and set up shop, and for hosting another brilliant show yet again. Not forgetting all of you that made the trip down to Wareham for the whole weekend. Let’s make 2017 even bigger!
