Ultimate Stance 2017

Date: 5 November 2017

Location: Telford International Centre, Shropshire

Words & Photos by Henry Phull

The Telford International Centre has become something of a second home for us. Starting the show season off with Ultimate Dubs in March, and finishing it in November with Ultimate Stance, both shows are certainly a must if you’re interested in custom cars – the perfect opportunity to see what’s new in the car scene. If you’re not an avid Volkswagen/VAG fan, Ultimate Stance might be the preferred show for you, however. Being open to all marques, there’s plenty of interesting stanced cars on display to take your fancy, whereas the display cars at Ultimate Dubs are strictly ‘VAG’. Being the final event of the year, we’ve typically seen most of these cars throughout the year, nonetheless, there were still a handful of gems that seemed to have appeared from nowhere, as well as a few European cars that made the long journey over. Overall, there was plenty to look at, including a UK Lowrider display keeping everyone entertained outdoors (check out the Bonus Gallery), and the carpeted hall which we were based in also hosted a retro car display and retro arcade and pinball zone. Here’s a few of our highlights…

As always, Ultimate Stance had an incredibly high standard of cars to drool over… the show never disappoints. It also marked the launch of our Winter clothing collection which went down an absolute storm – big thanks to everyone that popped by our store and picked up something, whether it was anything from a sticker to a hoodie… we couldn’t do what we do without you guys and girls. We’ll be back in the same location for Ultimate Dubs on March 11 with our new Spring collection – you’re not going to want to miss it! Get those cars finished and we’ll see you soon!

Shop Visit: Ergen Motorsport

Words & Photos by Henry Phull

Seeing as our diary is usually rather quiet come January, we were stoked to hear that our friends at Ergen Motorsport were holding an open house event at their newly finished headquarters in Fareham, Hampshire. If you’re interested in BMW’s and M-Power engines, you’ve most likely heard of Ergen. They’re masters of the trade, specializing in M-cars, rebuilding them, converting them, and extracting more power from them. We first became aware of them thanks to their S54 engine conversion in Nick Sahota’s iconic orange E30 M3, which we featured previously. If that build is anything to go by, these guys certainly know what they’re doing. Adem, the head honcho at Ergen, has been wanting to upgrade their unit for the past two years, and finally, towards the end of 2017, the deal was sealed on their awesome new premises. Working flat-out over the Christmas period on refurbishments, they managed to get the majority of it ready in time for a soft opening on the 6th of January.

So how does one go about setting up a business like Ergen? “In 2013 I was working as a sales manager and got messed about by my boss. I gave him an ultimatum, he tried to call my bluff, so I ended up quitting. I had always played with cars, especially E30’s from the age of 18 – when I had a dolphin grey 318. Pile of shit, but I loved it. Started tinkering, and it quickly became my new obsession.” Adem tells us… However, the progression into engine swaps and power gains truly began when he sourced himself a 50k mile bronze USA LHD E30 car to tinker with.

“It was originally a 325e, with the 2.7 engine. Completely rust free and concourse! I quickly got fed up with the lack of power and started looking into engine swaps. From there, I did a few engine swaps, including the M50, M52, and then the S54. Eventually, I started developing a plug n play loom for the swap to work directly with the E30. A few people I knew then saw this and asked me to come and do theirs for them, so I did. From there it has just grown into what it is today. I quit my job, decided that a single garage and gravel driveway were adequate to start a business, and cracked on!”

You only have to take a look at what they already have in the workshop, to realise that these guys mean business. Straight away we were drawn to a gorgeous white E30 M3 on ACS Type 1’s, owned by their customer AK Iconic Classics. Not only is it a fully restored, concourse exampe, it’s currently being converted with an S62 V8 engine from an E39 M5.

Ergen have fitted an all-new bottom end, oil pump, BBB drivetrain lightweight flywheel and Helix clutch, Bosch 044 high-pressure fuel pump, MK60 ABS (with Ergen’s in-car miniature servo kit for LHD cars), Awron vent gauge, Nitron R1 suspension, Superpro bushes throughout, and H&R antiroll bars. Oh, and a custom Ergen exhaust system with stainless V8 E30 headers. It’s the perfect car to demonstrate their skillset.

As well as the E30 M3, there are plenty more interesting cars also in for treatment, including an E46 M3 (getting an S85 V10 E60 M5 engine), and a Porsche 996 (receiving an LSX 454 cubic inch forged motor, which should be making over 750hp) – so it’s not always BMW orientated!

Ergen are committed to offering all sorts of bespoke services to cater for each vehicle that comes into the workshop. Adem designs and develops a wide variety of products, too, which are mostly plug n play. Be it a wiring loom for a V8, a remote servo kit, or a set of manifolds, he can do it. Along with their engine rebuilds, swaps, wiring services, ECU coding and mapping, the new unit also means an expansion into MOT’s, servicing, alignment and race car set up. It really is a one-stop shop for all things motorsport.

Along with the new workshop area, Ergen’s premises includes a retail shop dedicated to all aspects of motoring, which acts as the hub of the business… “It will be somewhere for us to help customers with their cars, demonstrate our own products and our chosen partners products” Adem explains…. “Brands like  Superpro, Nitron, Millers oils, Bosch, Arai, Sparco and any other decent motorsport brand you care to mention. We can get a hold of it, fit it and set it up for you.” Oh, and they’re even stocking the latest Slam Sanctuary clothing – if that isn’t one valid reason to go and visit, I don’t know what is…

In addition to daily duties, Ergen host their very own track days across the UK. “They’re usually very small and low key, but have steadily grown over the years. Our BHP Breakfast Club has gone from strength to strength, and our Track Day events are evolving too” Adem tells us… If you want to get involved in one of their track days, a normal day will set you back about £175 with just 30 cars on track, in addition to their VIP days which can have just 8 cars on track! “Track days are quite a specialist market, but that’s what we like; a personal service to making sure our customers have a great experience with us!” Ergen’s next event is being held alongside Raw Motorsport on the 9th March at Castle Combe – check out ergen.co.uk for more info.

However, if you fancy something that involves slightly less effort, Ergen have also dipped their toes into the world of race car simulators, which you can try out in their shop. It’s a lot of fun! Although there’s still some work to do, the new headquarters gives Ergen a much-needed environment to grow the business. We’ll be keeping a close eye on their happenings and definitely be paying them a visit with our new project car, to be announced soon, so keep your eyes peeled on our social media pages.

Gravity 2017

Date: 16 July 2017

Location: NAEC Stoneleigh, Warwickshire

Words & Photos by Henry Phull

When I think of SlammedUK, variation comes to mind. Regardless of their name, the brand is essentially an open book when it comes to their following of modified cars, which is why their show ‘Gravity’ appeals to all sorts of cars in the community. Following the success of last year’s debut event, Gravity returned to Stoneleigh Park for a second year. I was seriously impressed with last year, but I have to say, the latest offering completely blew 2016 away in terms of cars, trade, music, and the sheer amount of public attendees. So, another congratulations is in order for Jordan and his team at SlammedUK! Whether you’re into Volkswagens, BMWs, Lowriders, RWBs, or Jap cars… the list goes on. Gravity had it all within two huge indoor halls, as well a vast outdoor area (apologies – our booth was so busy that I didn’t get a chance to photograph outside this time!). I managed to sneak around the show before it opened to the public to capture a few of our favourite cars. Take a look below…

What a selection of cars… (and yes, I’m aware there’s quite a few E46 M3’s in there, but with so many great examples in the scene at the moment, I couldn’t help myself!). I’d just like to say a big thanks to anyone that dropped by the Slam Sanctuary booth and picked up something in our exclusive Summer Sale. We pretty much sold out and we’ve finally said goodbye to our ‘Steering Wheel’, ‘Spark Plug’ and ‘Helmet’ tees – they won’t be printed again, however, we’ll be dropping a brand new capsule collection at FittedUK this weekend in Manchester, so make sure you stop by and check out the new gear. If you liked the previous collection, you’re definitely going to dig what we have coming up.

VW Days 2017

Date: 10/11 June 2017

Location: Saint-Quentin, France

Words & Photos by Henry Phull

After attending Club Golf IDF’s VW Days last year for the first time, I knew it wasn’t an event I wanted to miss again, so I made sure to booked my travel and accommodation for the 2017 show well in advance. Held over two days, this show makes the perfect long weekend, or mini holiday if you’re travelling from another country. Whether you decide to camp at the show venue and take advantage of the onsite night-time entertainment, or stay in the nearby hotels and takeover the local town (which is what we did), VW Days is more about spending time with friends – it just so happens to be an incredible car show, too. With high quality cars attending from all over Europe, there was plenty to see – what they’ve achieved is, no doubt, France’s answer to a premier car show. Although I’d say the event is 90% VAG, Ilce and the organisers are partial to the odd BMW, Mercedes-Benz and non-VAG car being allowed in, which makes for a nice change, because although the Europeans build some of the best Volkswagens and Audis that I’ve ever seen, it’s still good to offer some variety – they seemed to get this just right. Just take a look at my highlights below…

VW Days is truly an amazing weekend away. Situated in Northern France, it’s a really easy drive along one toll road from the Euro Tunnel and ferry terminals (approx. 1hr45min). Plus it’s close to neighbouring countries too – which explains the large turnout of foreign cars mostly from Belgium and Germany. Whether you’re into camping, or prefer the luxuries of a hotel, I can’t recommend VW Days enough – it’s probably the next best thing to the Wörthersee experience and a lot more affordable. With so many cars to admire, make sure you check out the Bonus Gallery below to see even more. Big thanks to Ilce and the team for welcoming us – we’ll be back next year. Don’t think about it, do it!

Air Lift, Audio and Rotiform – Car Audio & Security’s Open Weekend 2017

Date: 29/30 April 2017

Location: Car Audio & Security, Hayes, West London

Words & Photos by Henry Phull

If you’re looking for a one-stop shop for all things Air Lift Performance, Rotiform wheels, and in-car entertainment, then Car Audio & Security (CAS) is the place to visit. Being the largest distributors in the UK and Europe, they’ve been on our radar ever since we started Slam Sanctuary. They’re well known for having some of the most notable demo cars in the car industry and car community – you will have no doubt seen a few of them at the big car shows such as Ultimate Dubs and Players. Every year, CAS open their premises to the public to show off their latest cars and what they have to offer. To top things off, they also offer a massive sale on most products for one weekend only, which certainly attracts people from all over the country. This year, the team have expanded their HQ with the addition of yet another warehouse – a great opportunity to pack it full of more show cars. We made the trip down on Sunday, the final day of the Open Weekend, to take a look at their 2017 demo vehicles and everything else that turned up. Check out our highlights below.

So, yet another incredible turnout for Car Audio & Security throughout their two-day event, with customers turning up from all over the UK to pick up a bargain. The quality of the CAS demo cars gets better and better each year, which just shows how far Rotiform wheels and Air Lift suspension have come in the last few years, now catering for some of the most high performance new vehicles (in addition to everything else) on the market. It’s never been easier to turn your run-of-the-mill car into something unique and above the rest. Car Audio & Security can make it happen for you. If you missed the event, head over to their website (caraudiosecurity.com), and see what they have to offer. Check out our Bonus Gallery below for even more cars from the day, too. We’ll be back next year!

Ultimate Dubs 2017

Date: 11/12 March 2017

Location: Telford International Centre, Shropshire

Words & Photos by Henry Phull

It’s been a long, drawn out, winter for us at Slam Sanctuary. So, we were fully stoked to finally arrive at Ultimate Dubs in Telford last weekend for the ‘show season’ opener. Hosted over a Saturday evening and all day Sunday, it’s a great chance for friends to catch-up after being busy with their normal lives… With the majority of people staying overnight, there’s plenty of time for social gatherings, whether it’s over cars, food, or beers – unless you’re too busy setting up and running a stand, like us, unfortunately! That’s because we’ve been sitting on the brand new Spring ’17 clothing collection for a couple of months waiting to drop it on you all at Ultimate Dubs. Well, it went down an absolute treat – we can’t thank everyone enough for almost clearing out the whole store. In fact, we’ve already had to restock a lot of items, which should be available through our online store in a few weeks time. We also supported our good friends at Distinct Detail Co. with debuting their new brand of boutique car care products on our booth – they’re definitely a company to watch!

This year we displayed Ben Rye’s ’57 Beetle (which we recently featured), Jack Royston’s incredible Type 3 Notchback, and of course, (with us being us) we had to have a BMW on the booth… in the form of Jack Williams’ E28, which was finished just a couple of days prior! I’ll let the photographs do the rest, sit back and enjoy…

Yeah, yeah, I know… It didn’t seem like much of a ‘Dubs’ show, but let’s face it, that argument is getting old now. Times are changing, and there just aren’t as many people building Volkswagens anymore, or at least there aren’t many stand-out builds. Ultimate Dubs is much more of a trade exhibition these days, and if companies are building BMWs, Mercs, and Jap cars, then that’s what you’re going to see. We still did our best to showcase some of our favourite VAG examples, though – but we’re always going to photograph what captures our attention and what we feel is ‘cool’. We hope you all had a fantastic weekend if you attended, and you’ll be glad to hear that our next event will be entirely Volkswagen based, as we’re heading to The Volksworld Show on the 25/26th March!

Ultimate Stance 2016

Date: 30 October 2016

Location: Telford International Centre, Shropshire

Words & Photos by Henry Phull

Slam Sanctuary has just hit another milestone! One year has passed since debuting our booth, clothing range and pop-up store back at Ultimate Stance 2015. That’s one whole year of taking our brand and products around the UK and Europe, and I have to say, the reception has been phenomenal and better than I could’ve imagined. You are all making my dream come true, so thank you – every single one of you who continues to read the blog, purchase our products and visit us when we are out at events. I’m seeing more and more people wearing our clothing at shows – it means so much that so many of you want to spend your hard earned cash on supporting the brand. With that said, the return of Ultimate Stance this year meant that we had to top our previous efforts. Naturally, we returned to our favourite spot, the VIP carpeted hall in the Telford International Centre, with four of the UK’s best BMWs… representing the two worlds of suspension that we now offer, with Bekir’s E39 & Az’s E92 both on air, and Nick’s E34 & Alex’s E36 showing what can still be achieved on static coilovers. As well as having our new Autumn/Winter clothing collection available, we also brought down our sofa and TV with Xbox One S and Forza Horizon 3 for people to play during the day, it turned out to be a great hangover cure for those not wanting to do much after a heavy night of partying. Ultimate Stance is always the perfect end-of-season event – there’s always a huge variety of cars on display, and I’d say it’s a show completely different people and cars from the automotive world finally come together for one final blowout. Take a look at the highlights…

Ultimate Stance really is a great way to end the car show season. Turning into an overnight event for those displaying cars and trading, it’s a bit more chilled, allowing more time to be spent with friends that probably won’t be reunited again until next year when the season starts again with Ultimate Dubs at the same venue. With some cool touches, like the Wheel Whores display, a Retro Hall packed with classic cars and retro gaming consoles free to play, and even a gathering of Lowriders outdoors… there was plenty going on to keep everyone occupied for the day. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed this season of events in the UK, plus the few we were lucky enough to head over to mainland Europe for. Our next show will indeed be Ultimate Dubs in March 2017 – keep an eye social media and save the date when it’s announced. In the meantime, we have plenty of content coming up to keep you entertained during the winter months, so check back to slamsanctuary.com soon.

Westside Treffen 2016

Date: 25 September 2016

Location: Chalfont St. Peter Cricket Club, Gerrards Cross

Words & Photos by Henry Phull

Westside Treffen is the hidden gem of modified car shows in the UK. It really does surprise me how many people don’t know of its existence when I mention it. From people that have been, including all the regulars, you’ll constantly hear “Come to Westside. It’s THE most chilled out show.” Well, they ain’t lying! The quality of cars on display is usually top notch too, and that’s partly what makes this show awesome. It could also have something to do with the time of year, being the last outdoor event on the calendar, a lot of people are about to tuck their show cars away for winter. Westside is one final stage for your pride and joy to make a spectacle before the new show season (Unless you’re attending Ultimate Stance this weekend, of course – but the crowd there is slightly different). The ideology for Westside is pretty simple really. Book out a cricket club on the outskirts of West London, bring your friends and their cars (of which 80% happen to be concourse condition classic Volkswagens), get the family to help out with some incredible home-cooked food, 80s/90s music and you’re onto a winner. It’s no surprise that the show has grown year on year but still remains a small, relaxed event.

I’m really pleased that Westside has stuck to the same venue. It seems like they could move somewhere bigger every year with ease. Instead, they stick to what they know and what works. Let’s face it, there’s plenty of larger shows you can visit, but this is partly what makes Westside unique. Some worry about getting their car into the show because of the limited space – I say just turn up earlier! I think I said it in my previous article, but 2016 has not been kind to us in regards to rain… Luckily the rain stayed away for this show, but it had been chucking it down the previous night, which meant wet roads on route to the show. This blatantly put a few people off, but it just so happened that people turned up a bit later than usual. The show was heaving. I turned up, caught up with loads of friends, admired some impressive cars, and feasted on some fantastic Jamaican and Indian food. What’s not to love? If you’ve still not been to Westside, you’ve been missing out.

We’ll catch you all very soon with our booth at Ultimate Stance (Telford International Centre) on Sunday 30th October.

Gravity 2016

Date: 17 July 2016

Location: NAEC, Stoneleigh, Warwickshire

Words & Photos by Henry Phull

Launching a new automotive event in the congested UK show circuit is a daunting task. For people that do what we do, a dedicated show is the ultimate dream and accomplishment, which our friends at Slammed UK have managed to achieve this year with their debut show ‘Gravity’. With more and more shows popping up on the calendar, the venue has become the ‘make or break’ factor. Jordan, the main man behind Slammed UK and Gravity, spent a lot of time getting it right, opting for NAEC at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire – just outside of Coventry. An ideal central location, easily accessible for the rest of the country, and with plenty of indoor space – absolutely critical now that the British weather has become as unpredictable as ever. With two halls; a VIP-style room similar to those at Ultimate Dubs, a main hall with barn-like lighting & attributes, plus a large outside area, there was a nice contrast of backdrops which makes for an overall captivating feeling. Slammed UK are known for their variation in the car scene and their show was the perfect example of that. Take a look at our highlights…

So, did Gravity exceed our expectations? I’d say so. It’s difficult to stand out from other shows, but the choice of venue completely made it for us. We don’t always want to see a perfect looking show hall, and Gravity’s main hall was different to most shows – with more of an air-cooled vibe to it, which actually worked really well with the range of cars on display. Of course, being a debut show, there were a few things that could be improved on, but that’s to be expected – I’m sure Jordan and the team now have plenty to think about and are already planning next year’s show. If you missed it, don’t think twice about attending in 2017 – Gravity is definitely one to watch.

Early Edition 2014: Part 2

Words & Photos by Henry Phull

As I mentioned in Part 1 of our Early Edition coverage, the show was absolutely packed with people and cars, so many in fact that I had to split the report into two parts. There was so much to see with such a variation of vehicles including a countless amount of non-VAG cars finally being appreciated. Walking around the show, of course I still heard a few people complaining that Edition38 is a VAG show despite them being outside the show anyway. If you don’t like it, move on, and let others enjoy a day out with other car enthusiasts! So, let’s take a look at some of my highlights from the lower and upper car parks at the venue…

Starting off with the FourSeasons Audi’s. B5 perfection right there.

This was pretty badass, an EOS with Scirocco front end conversion.

I was ecstatic to see this classic, a BMW 2002 looking elegant.

A familiar set of wheels from Ultimate Dubs…

You don’t come across Mk1 Polo’s that often, except for Famous James’ of course, so this was a nice surprise.

A bagged E46 rocking the new Rotiform VCE rims.

These Mazdaspeed wheels were awesome!

I’m a sucker for RF’s, yes they are popular, but as we saw the TT in Part 1 pulled them off as 18″, and here on this E46 they’ve been stepped up big time. Very cool.

A personal favourite B5 wagon, I had to wait about 10 minutes crouching down to get this shot with the amount of passers by.

Nice to see these two out together again, they make a great pair. Lovely clean examples of the E36 M3.

Later they were joined by two more…

An absolutely stunning E21 on air.

Both these guys are taking E46’s to the next level with seriously impressive static ride height.

There were also a few air cooled VW’s near the show entrance including this Beetle.

Moving on to the upper car park, there was even more variation to see.

Even a couple of nice Jap examples…

It’s always nice to see the LikeHell Mini, this year rocking new wheels!

It’s not often that you see these on anything other than a BMW, but this set of BBS RT splits seem to really suit the Mk3.

You’ll either love or hate Rota’s but I personally thought this E36 touring sat nicely on them.

Cool Fifteen52 TurboMac’s on this TT…

I’m not normally a roofbox fan but this “LOLVO” caught my eye with a few tasteful modifications.

Two nice examples of Rotiform IND usage, they seem to work on so many cars.

I’ve noticed that E39’s are becoming more popular this year already, perhaps people are getting inspired from Rich’s example we featured? Great to see.

That about concludes our Early Edition photo coverage. What a simply breathtaking turnout for the Edition38 guys, so thank you for having us. This was just the pre-show, I can’t begin to imagine what the main show and shine event will be like later in the year!
