Edition38 Show & Shine 2016

Date: 2-4 September 2016

Location: Overstone Park, Northampton

Words & Photos by Henry Phull

It’s that time again… Edition38! This is probably the most anticipated show of the year for Volkswagen and VAG fans. It’s essentially a camping event held over a long weekend, the ideal opportunity to get together with friends and cars. Thanks to plenty of night-time entertainment, people treat it as a party weekend, followed by one of the best Show & Shines in the country at the end of it. Edition has grown so much, that each year I notice a stronger presence of cars that have travelled over from Europe. This year was no exception, as I was blown away by plenty of examples from the Netherlands, Belgium, and France which stood out from everything else – showing us Brits how it should be done. Now, due to the weather being absolutely disgusting on the Friday and Saturday of the event, we skipped them and made our way up on Sunday (the main day for Show & Shine), where the rain stayed away, luckily. Props to everyone that camped all weekend in the wet and mud – that’s dedication! Enjoy our round-up, with some of the UK and Europe’s highest quality dubs.

We sneaked in a few photographs of BMW’s, naturally, as you can often find plenty of non-VAG cars dotted around outside the show field, trying their best to join in. Looking at Volkswagens all day can sometimes become a little boring for us – Edition is one of the few shows left that has still stuck to the ‘VAG only’ rule, but fair play to them, they are still attracting the numbers and going strong, this is was their 16th show! But it still makes you wonder – will they ever give in and let other marques be part of the show? Time will tell. Despite the rain, it looked like most people had a fantastic weekend. Thanks to the Edition38 team for having us, we’ll be back.

Auto Grüppe’s Summer Run 2016

Date: 29 August 2016

Location: Southsea seafront, Hampshire

Words & Photos by Henry Phull

Auto Grüppe organised an event back in 2014… the congregation of some incredible cars at Beaconsfield services on the M40, followed by a leisurely drive to the rendezvous point at Southsea seafront in Hampshire, for a chilled evening with friends and cars. To this day, it remains one of the coolest gatherings that I’ve attended in the UK. I’ve been patiently waiting for the guys to plan the next one – This year they finally got their act together and set a date for the second event. The idea was exactly the same as before (why change something that worked so well, right?), another cruise from Beaconsfield down to Southsea. I decided to skip the convoy and meet up with everyone in Southsea along with a few other Southerners, seeing as we live around the area, anyway. When I arrived, there were already plenty of modified cars trying to take over the Avenue where the meet was being held – unfortunately it was a bank holiday Monday after a big music festival held at the same location, so there were a few vans and tractors moving about and clearing up the rubbish from the weekend, but we made the most of it and it didn’t seem to spoil the vibe. To top it off, the weather was glorious.

This was the sort of evening that sticks with you.. even more so than the typical car show, and don’t worry, not your average car park meet. It was definitely refreshing to see a turnout of quality vehicles take over a picturesque Avenue – particularly when you get such a beautiful sunset in the background. I think the photos speak for themselves, so props to Auto Grüppe for hosting yet another successful ‘Summer Run’. So this has got me thinking, we already have ‘Homegrown’ in West London and ‘Dub Club’ in the Midlands… perhaps we need something like this more frequently down on the south coast. What do you guys think? Leave your thoughts in the comments.

VW Days 2016

Date: 18/19 June 2016

Location: Seraucourt-le-Grand, France

Words & Photos by Henry Phull

This year is all about the European car shows here at Slam Sanctuary. I’d heard numerous good things about VW Days, which is organised every year by ‘Club Golf Ile de France’ and held in a quiet town just outside of Saint Quentin. This is nice for us Brits as the venue is less than a two-hour drive from the Calais terminal, and essentially one stress-free smooth toll road. Being a two day event, we set off on the Saturday morning from the Eurotunnel and decided to stay overnight in a hotel just ten minutes away, although for a majority of the show goers, it’s all about the camping experience. This year though, the weather on Saturday was horrendous – so I’m glad I had a hotel room! The rain put a few people off on day one making it a washout, but come Sunday the sun was out and the show transformed into something epic. I even came home with some sunburn! Much like when we were in Belgium, it was a nice change to see what the Europeans are building.  To adhere to the name VW Days, the event is very VAG-orientated, understandably, with a few exceptions that you’ll find throughout the article. All in all, I was blown away by the variety of builds and the sheer size of the show. Here are the cars that stood out from the crowd…

What a variation, right? The quality of cars was just phenomenal, and it’s hardly surprising that so many people from the UK make the trip over for VW Days. It’s a petrolhead’s dream short break, whether you camp and enjoy the party onsite, or decide to hotel it and experience the local town that becomes completely taken over by modified cars from all over Europe – similar to a mini-Wörthersee in fact. Many thanks to Club Golf IDF for having us, we’ll certainly be back again! Our next European adventure will take us to M.I.V.W. in August. Until then, see you all at the coming UK events.

Eurosunday 2015

Location: Lommel, Belgium

Date: 7 June 2015

Words & Photos by Henry Phull

Eurosunday is one of those European shows I’ve been wanting to go to ever since I started Slam Sanctuary. It’s the show that everyone always raves to me about. I thought I’d be missing it yet again this year – mainly due to low funds having recently spent too much on my project car. Sounds familiar, right? However, flashback to 8pm on the Saturday night before the show, and I received a message from my friend Mark saying “Eurosunday….?”. After a few minutes of laughing at each other, we checked the Euro Tunnel prices, £60 return. Doable! Belgium and back in one day… it seemed like madness, considering we are all the way in Bournemouth – 170 miles from Folkestone. But thinking about it, what else were we going to do on a Sunday? Alarms set for 3.30am, we set off at 4am and thrashed the Mk4 to the Euro Tunnel, with a McDonald’s breakfast and coffee stop tied in of course. To our dismay and after our stupidly early start, we arrived at the Euro Tunnel terminal only to be told there were delays of up to two hours… we weren’t impressed!

Once we finally boarded the train, a brief 40 minutes later we were in Calais, and set off straight away to the show venue. As we were now running late, we gunned it through the short stretch of France and over the border, making our way past Antwerp and then through the delightful countryside into Lommel. We only stopped once for a toilet break by the side of the road! The venue itself was situated in the nearby industrial estate, completely abandoned from the public, making it an ideal venue to host a car show.

We arrived just after Midday, and I was shocked at the sheer amount of cars in the show, it was definitely bigger than anything I’m used to in the UK. Plus to make things even better, it was super hot. After a quick glance at the cars whilst queuing to get in, we both knew we’d made the right decision to do this crazy last minute trip. Anyway, sit back, and let me take you through my show highlights…

That sums up my Eurosunday highlights, hopefully you enjoyed my selection! We stuck around for a short while after the show but then remembered that we had another train to catch, so we hit the road again. Just before we got to Antwerp we bumped into Jamie, Kiran and the rest of the Players crew in their two Mk1’s. As they were also heading for the Euro Tunnel, we decided to join their convoy. Let me tell you, following these two beauties at neck breaking speeds through Belgium and France was quite a sight! Naturally I had to grab a few rolling shots…

I’m so pleased that I finally managed to get over to Belgium for the day. Not only was it my first Eurosunday, but my first ever European car show. You know those mates that constantly go on about how much better Euro shows are? We’ve all got them… Well I’m sorry to say, but I think it’s probably true! This has just made me want to do a lot more Euro shows as soon as possible! Don’t get me wrong, I love the UK shows, but it was certainly nice to mix things up a bit and see some cars I’m not used to seeing. On that note, I’d recommend it to anyone. Hopefully Slam Sanctuary will be back next year!

Caffeine and Cars – Kicking Off The Year with Car Audio & Security

Words & Photos by Henry Phull

Whenever we hear of any sort of event that Car Audio & Security are planning, we know it’s going to be a mind blowing experience. Being the UK’s largest car electronics retailer, you can always expect to see the best and latest technologies on display. However, over the past few years they’ve become even better known as Europe’s number one Air Lift Performance and Rotiform dealer – therefore if you share our interest in the modified car scene, these guys will no doubt be a household name. So, was it worth the 190 mile round trip from the South Coast up to the Car Audio & Security headquarters in Hayes (West London)? Well with good coffee, good company, and of course incredible cars… the answer should be obvious.

‘Caffeine & Cars’ was all about unveiling the new Rotiform cast wheel collection, enabling people to pre-order any of the new sets before the rest of the general public. Plus, some appealing discounts on Car Audio & Security’s other products such as Air Lift, Rockford Fosgate, Kenwood and much more.

Unsurprisingly the weather was appalling, although this is fully expected for most of our trips to London. This somewhat had an effect on the overall turnout of cars, but nonetheless plenty of people were turning up throughout the day to grab some deals, talk cars and check out the new wheels. With Ultimate Dubs only two weeks away, most of the car’s we were hoping to see are still being finished off!

No problem for Car Audio & Security though, with their full line up of demo vehicles finished and on display – showing off the best of what Rotiform and Air Lift have to offer, always a winning combination with any modern Audi or Volkswagen platform in particular.

Vick Nagi’s red A4 Avant was certainly a talking point for most, he made the trip down from Leeds to show his support. Check out the widened arches allowing those 20″ RS5 rotor wheels to tuck perfectly all round.

Amongst all the German metal it is always a pleasant change to see the Dodge Challenger SRT8 demo car, complete on a full Air Lift kit making it an instant car for the wishlist. It just goes to show that you can bag anything if you really want to! No doubt this improves the stock ‘boaty’ handling, too.

On to the main spectacle and there’s no argument.. Parm’s latest RS4 is an absolute beast. A refined and tasteful build kitted out with full Air Lift suspension, tucking a brand new set of Rotiform SPF in a gorgeous double dark tint (DDT) resulting in an utterly mean look. It’s finished off with one of the nicest boot installs we’ve come across in a while. What more could you require from an Avant…

Tuck was certainly an occurring theme of the day, even with this Mk6 Golf R on 20″ Rotiform BLQs.

Another new set of the beautiful SPF’s were found on the Car Audio & Security Mk5 Edition 30.

Just in case you hadn’t seen enough Rotiform and Air Lift!

Outside, we captured a few cars that caught our eye, some even still in Winter mode like a certain bagged S4 you may recognise…

We loved Ricardo’s bagged A1 on Rotiform VCEs…

And Mark’s Mk4 Golf estate with Bora front end conversion on yet another set of VCEs which really suit this car.

An awesome afternoon was had, spent mostly catching up with some of our friends and meeting new ones. We’re blown away by some of Rotiform’s latest offerings, so if you’re looking to upgrade for show season, they’ve certainly upped their game even more so this year. We’re glad we could make the trip up to witness Car Audio & Security’s high level of standard as per usual. If you missed out on the action, head over to their website (caraudiosecurity.com) to check out the new collection. Thanks for having us, here’s hoping we see a few more of these smaller events throughout the year, especially when the weather improves.
