Edition38 Show & Shine 2017

Date: 1-3 September 2017

Location: Overstone Park, Northampton

Words & Photos by Henry Phull

Edition38 is the go-to weekender for anyone interested in Volkswagens (and all other VAG cars of course). Although the majority of show-goers tend to look forward to the camping and nightlife shenanigans, E38’s Show & Shine brings some of the highest quality cars from all over the UK and Europe (in fact, the Euro turnout seems to grow significantly year on year). Every time I drive into Overstone Park, I’m greeted to that distinctly chilled, summertime vibe which I’ve come to love… 2017’s event was no different. Albeit noticeably quieter than previous years, the showground was still full of some incredible metal which kept me occupied all day. With a live-stage providing music and inviting owners and their cars up to talk about their builds, there’s plenty going on in the background whilst you’re left to check out the cars in the sun. Check out my roundup below…

Setting Trends – Becky Evans’ 1983 BMW E21 316

Words & Photos by Henry Phull

If you asked me to list some of the most influential classic BMWs of our generation, Becky Evans’ E21 would be right up there. Both she and this little 316 have become icons throughout the global car community (you’ll probably know her as Queen B on Instagram and her recent YouTube channel). Becky’s E21 is the absolute epitome of the classic ‘bagged BMW’ combo, and although the recipe is nothing mind-blowing, the car as a whole has become a complete trendsetter. Simply introducing a classic to the ground and adding the right wheels (notably, a set of BBS RS), effectively blew people’s minds a good four or so years ago. Now, everyone wants their classic BMW to look like hers – that must be quite the compliment. With the car going through several transformations during her ownership, Becky has finally got to a stage where she’s happy with it. Having known her for years, I’ve watched the car progress, and waited a long time to get this gorgeous E21 in front of my lens. Earlier this year that time finally came…

Prior to the E21, Becky has been interested in cars since her childhood. With both her parents being petrolheads, she spent a lot of time around motorsport and racing. Naturally, she was going to be into cars. When she passed her test, she got a Mk4 Golf 1.4, and the fascination with the modified scene grew. “People really used to go to town on body modifications. Smoothed this, smoothed that. OEM+ parts, adding in later-gen features to older generation cars.” she explains and admits that her Mk4 got a taste of the times, with US-spec bodywork and smoothed tailgate in addition to all the usual mods of the moment.

However, when the time came for something new, Becky remembered about her mum owning an E21 back when she was her age. “I wanted to recreate this image of her in my mind” she explains. Plus, she had always been fascinated by BMW’s unique style herself. Unsurprisingly, an internet search began… which led her to a Henna Rot example that hadn’t made its reserve price on eBay. “I rang the seller quickly, and asked ‘Is it really as clean as it looks?’ and she said ‘yes, I promise you!’ – so then we grabbed the trailer and made the trip down to deepest darkest Somerset – baring in mind that I lived in Coventry at the time.” Just a two-owner car, the previous (also a woman) owner had only used it around town and to go to the shops. “She was super cool though, and wanted to know that the car was going to a good home. I promised her that I had a plan for it…” Well, I think it’s safe to say that Becky kept that promise.

The E21 was clean and rust-free, only requiring a small amount of cosmetic work to make it presentable, which made it the ideal original candidate for what Becky was envisioning. “I knew I always wanted to bag it, having gone through the pain having a static car, bags were really the way to go. I always loved the BBS RS wheel, but never had a car that I could put them on. That was the initial vision.” It only took four months to get the car bagged and on wheels, making its first debut at Ultimate Dubs 2013. However, to get it to the level it’s at now took four years. “The overall quality of the build has been lifted over the years, with an amazing paint job, better engineering of the air system and the final finish on the wheels” Becky explains, which we’ll be looking at next…

In its latest guise, the E21’s air suspension system was completely redesigned by Henry at RIIVA Design, including re-engineered custom air struts (using universal bags front and rear), upgrading to Air Lift Performance 3P management and creating a new tasteful boot build featuring a body-coloured seamless tank and hard lines, trimmed to compliment the rest of the interior. As a result, the car now drives and handles better than it ever did.

On to Becky’s beloved BBS RS073’s, which were owned previously by several people within a circle of her friends, so she knew they had been looked after. “These ones are pretty special in that they came stepped from the factory, they are 30-bolt centres, as opposed to 34 which traditionally come on the 16s. So these have that smaller centre, stepped lip look that I love but are original from factory like that” she explains. The wheels are spec’d as follows: 16×8 (2″ step) fronts, 16×9 (3″ step) rears with 195/35 and 215/30 tyres.

The BBS’ were originally purchased at the same time she bought the car, when they had polished lips and powder coated centres with gold hardware – pretty much the go-to spec. More recently, the wheels have undergone complete refinishing by Elie at Voodoo who has ceramic polished everything along with matching hardware and custom quarter height hex nuts. They now compliment the car perfectly.

It was time to attack the interior. Becky wanted to keep this as original as possible, but just wasn’t a fan of the original SE-style seats, especially considering one of them was damaged. A massive fan of the Ford Escort Recaro fishnet seats, she knew they would look right at home in the E21, if they were trimmed correctly. She finally found a set of Recaro’s from an RS2000, and began hunting for some original BMW material to trim them in, with the intention of matching the original rear bench.

Becky opted for the services of Dave Goodwin (Dave The Trimmer) to undertake the re-trim. “I wanted it to be perfect, so in the end, the search took us to some guy in Italy who happened to have a roll of the 83 pergament corduroy that we needed.” After a long time waiting, the seats were finally trimmed and now look like they could have been there from the factory. The interior is finished off with a Nardi Torino wooden steering wheel, naturally.

After running the car in its original cosmetic state for a number of years, Becky finally saved enough money to get a top-level paint job to match the overall picture she had in her head. She enlisted the services of Steve Denton at Stylehaus to carry out a complete bare metal respray in the original Henna Rot red. “The finish on the car is insane, I can’t thank him enough for the job he’s done.” she remarks. Along with the immaculate paint, you’ll notice a few subtle changes, like the rear window louvre, heckblende, and the headlights which have been converted back to a single setup, creating an overall sublime package.

Aesthetically, Becky has revised the E21 to the point of perfection… truth be told, nothing else needs to be done to the outside of the car without the risk of ruining it. Unlike a lot of people, she doesn’t feel the need to go overboard by trying to win over the internet, even though she’s had the car for so long (a lot of people would get bored, right?). To Becky, it’s been about refining her dream BMW with that timeless look. Of course, like all project cars, there’s still work to be done behind the scenes… The original M10 engine remains untouched (apart from much-needed maintenance), so her next port of call is to fit a set of carbs that are currently sat in the garage, and shaving/painting the engine bay over Winter time. Until then, the car is being enjoyed whenever she gets the time!

The Air Lift Show & Shine BBQ 2017

Date: 27 August 2017

Location: Car Audio & Security, Hayes

Words & Photos by Henry Phull

We only recently visited Car Audio & Security (CAS) back in April this year to attend their annual Open Weekend, so to hear that they were opening their doors again a few months later was great news. We always look forward to the laid-back vibe that comes with any CAS event… this time around, they were set to host Air Lift Performance’s Show & Shine BBQ, which promised to present some of the highest quality bagged cars in the UK. Tied with valuable show & shine prizes from sponsors including Meguiar’s, Rotiform, Kenwood, GoPro, Alpine, Rockford Fosgate, JL Audio, and ourselves… a BBQ with all the trimmings (completely free of charge – nice touch!), plus, plenty of instore deals as is to be expected from Car Audio & Security, they were on to a winner. It just so happened that the weather was absolutely perfect, too, which meant the turnout was even better than expected. CAS’s premises were completely overrun by modified cars, including the surrounding roads and industrial estate. It was quite a sight! Check out some of our favourite cars from the day below…

Air suspension is more popular than ever before, evidently, it’s become an essential element to any build these days. From practicality, performance, and visual transformation, it’s a no-brainer. Air Lift Performance continue to lead the pack here in the UK and it’s great to see them constantly involved with our car community. They even gave away a complete 3P management system to a lucky winner! The Show & Shine BBQ acted as a perfect opportunity to show how stunning any car can look when slammed on air suspension. Hell, it just makes us want to go out and bag everything and anything! It was also rather refreshing to see that they’d allowed a few static and hydro’d cars into the event too. At the end of the day, this is what car culture should be about – acceptance and respect for everyone. After this year’s successful BBQ, we have a feeling that it’ll be making a return, so keep your eyes peeled in 2018 for details. Big thanks to Car Audio & Security for hosting and inviting us down with our Pop-Up Store. Don’t forget to check out even more photos below in the Bonus Gallery.

FittedUK 2017

Date: 30 July 2017

Location: Eventcity, Manchester

Words & Photos by Henry Phull

When FittedUK moved their show to Eventcity in Manchester last year, I wasn’t really sure what to expect, as the venue was staggering in size. However, they pulled it off and the show was a huge success, marking it as one of the UK’s largest indoor automotive events whilst catering for all sides of the industry, and the many styles that come with vehicle modification. The show has something for everyone… With four halls, 28,000 sq metres of indoor space, and 22,000 sq metres of outdoor space, it really is absolutely huge. You’d think it would be hard to fill such a vast space with quality cars, but yet again, the team at FittedUK smashed it and put on an incredible display. From new Lamborghini’s to hot rods, from custom bikes to lowriders… the variation was seriously impressive. The coolest thing about FittedUK? It’s got to be seeing select cars on raised podiums. Cool, or what? I’ve done my best to capture some of my favourite cars from the day, check them out below and don’t forget to browse the ‘Bonus Gallery’ too.

With such a immense event, I wanted the Slam Sanctuary booth to follow the same ethos, and with the support of four stunning SS-feature cars, we really made an impact – I’m pleased to call this our best trade display yet. We also had the couch, TV, and Xbox set up with Forza on the go, and plenty of FREE Jimmy’s Iced Coffee with every purchase. I hope you all enjoyed it as much as we did! Most significantly, FittedUK saw the unveiling of our new ‘Smoke & Gasoline’ capsule clothing collection which went down an absolute treat. Thanks to everyone that came and picked something up! If you missed us, you can now buy everything online with FREE UK delivery – just visit http://store.slamsanctuary.com – Hurry as this collection is limited to just 100 pieces per design. Until next year, FittedUK… Keep up the good work. Catch you all this weekend for RollHard Cressing where our Pop-Up Store will be back out.

Gravity 2017

Date: 16 July 2017

Location: NAEC Stoneleigh, Warwickshire

Words & Photos by Henry Phull

When I think of SlammedUK, variation comes to mind. Regardless of their name, the brand is essentially an open book when it comes to their following of modified cars, which is why their show ‘Gravity’ appeals to all sorts of cars in the community. Following the success of last year’s debut event, Gravity returned to Stoneleigh Park for a second year. I was seriously impressed with last year, but I have to say, the latest offering completely blew 2016 away in terms of cars, trade, music, and the sheer amount of public attendees. So, another congratulations is in order for Jordan and his team at SlammedUK! Whether you’re into Volkswagens, BMWs, Lowriders, RWBs, or Jap cars… the list goes on. Gravity had it all within two huge indoor halls, as well a vast outdoor area (apologies – our booth was so busy that I didn’t get a chance to photograph outside this time!). I managed to sneak around the show before it opened to the public to capture a few of our favourite cars. Take a look below…

What a selection of cars… (and yes, I’m aware there’s quite a few E46 M3’s in there, but with so many great examples in the scene at the moment, I couldn’t help myself!). I’d just like to say a big thanks to anyone that dropped by the Slam Sanctuary booth and picked up something in our exclusive Summer Sale. We pretty much sold out and we’ve finally said goodbye to our ‘Steering Wheel’, ‘Spark Plug’ and ‘Helmet’ tees – they won’t be printed again, however, we’ll be dropping a brand new capsule collection at FittedUK this weekend in Manchester, so make sure you stop by and check out the new gear. If you liked the previous collection, you’re definitely going to dig what we have coming up.

Last year there was one event, in particular, that had me drooling all over my iPhone screen… the one and only Raceism Event, which boasted purely high-quality cars at a jaw-dropping venue. To top it off there was insane drifting taking place simultaneously, notably featuring a fully stanced, supercharged widebody E46 M3, going at it all weekend! It looked like my idea of heaven, so much so that I knew I had to get over to Poland for their next event. I initially considered driving over from the UK, but damn, Wrocław is a long way! So I looked into flying and amazingly managed to find flights from Stansted-Wrocław for just £50 return. It was decided, then, I was going to Poland! As the flight was so cheap, I just booked it and decided to worry about everything else later. It actually worked out really well. I split the whole trip with a friend, and we found accommodation for four nights for just £60 each and used UBER (which were also stupidly-cheap) to travel around. Raceism were kind enough to sort us out with some Media passes too, so we could get nice and close to the action. The event itself takes place at Wrocław’s municipal stadium, a huge venue with an ‘upper deck’ area utilised for the static show, and a lower car park which is transformed into a drift circuit for the weekend. We arrived nice and early on the Friday, to watch all the show cars arrive and park up. The quality of cars was just as I imagined… next level. I mean, there were four RWB Porsche’s in attendance. Yeah, four! It’s no surprise that Raceism use the slogan “Go Hard” to promote their show… it sums it up perfectly. I could talk about it all day, but I’ll let the photos speak for themselves. Sit back and enjoy…

I can’t think of any other event that I’ve attended where the quality of cars has been this high. Raceism have created a truly prestigious car show for the European stance community, with cars from all over the continent in attendance, and judges hailing from the UK to Japan. Plus, the ‘Next Level’ drifting event was worth the trip alone. This wasn’t your typical drift championship – think more ‘homebrew’ and you get the idea. Health and safety was so relaxed that we could get right up and close to the cars on track – check out the Bonus Gallery below to see what I mean! So if you asked me which ONE car show to visit, it’d be Raceism. It’s the perfect opportunity to have a short break away, and if you’re travelling from the UK, you’ll find everything in Poland extremely cheap! Next year’s dates have already been confirmed for 6-8 July 2018 – make sure you get it in your diary. We’ll be back.

Players Classic 2017

Date: 17 June 2017

Location: Goodwood Motor Circuit, Chichester

Words & Photos by Henry Phull

There’s no better way to describe Players Classic than to call it the UK’s premium event for modified cars. Everything here is just cool. I always look forward to this one because of the historic venue, Goodwood Motor Circuit, which is transformed and packed-out with high quality show cars for one day a year. If variation is what you want, then this event does this oh so well… Walking through the show you’ll be presented with everything from pristine Porsche 356’s, to drift cars, lowriders, and everything in between – and, luckily for us, plenty of slammed vehicles. Players Classic is a pre-approved event, which means the show organisers (Carl Taylor & Jay McToldridge) spend a lot of time choosing which cars will gain a place in the show, and decide on where they’ll be placed. Clearly, they’ve become rather good at selecting a suitable mixture of absolute quality – the cars on display definitely seem to be getting better and better each year, they’ve got this on point. It’s forever expanding too, which means if you’re not lucky enough to gain a space for your car within the immediate show area, there are now even more locations within Goodwood’s grounds in which you’d most likely be placed. This means there was even more to see this year, I’ve done my best to pick some of my favourites, so enjoy the Slam Sanctuary highlights below…

Players Classic has always been lucky with the weather (bar a rather harsh freak-downpour a couple of years back), but 2017’s show was certainly the hottest one yet! Monster Energy were on hand giving out plenty of energy drinks to keep everyone hydrated, and they even brought down their sponsored British Drift champion ‘Baggsy’ and his PS13 for a few drift displays on the track. Furthermore, keeping up with the venue’s motorsport heritage, there was also a track-day happening simultaneously throughout the day, with all sorts of cars going out. So, there was plenty to see if you did happen to get bored of wandering around show cars. Players Classic’s overall package is everything you want from a car show. It’s great news to hear that 2018’s event will be held over two days, it sounds like it’s about to get a whole lot bigger – I can’t wait to see what they have planned!

VW Days 2017

Date: 10/11 June 2017

Location: Saint-Quentin, France

Words & Photos by Henry Phull

After attending Club Golf IDF’s VW Days last year for the first time, I knew it wasn’t an event I wanted to miss again, so I made sure to booked my travel and accommodation for the 2017 show well in advance. Held over two days, this show makes the perfect long weekend, or mini holiday if you’re travelling from another country. Whether you decide to camp at the show venue and take advantage of the onsite night-time entertainment, or stay in the nearby hotels and takeover the local town (which is what we did), VW Days is more about spending time with friends – it just so happens to be an incredible car show, too. With high quality cars attending from all over Europe, there was plenty to see – what they’ve achieved is, no doubt, France’s answer to a premier car show. Although I’d say the event is 90% VAG, Ilce and the organisers are partial to the odd BMW, Mercedes-Benz and non-VAG car being allowed in, which makes for a nice change, because although the Europeans build some of the best Volkswagens and Audis that I’ve ever seen, it’s still good to offer some variety – they seemed to get this just right. Just take a look at my highlights below…
